First Impression

The wine list at The Rams Head Inn feels exactly like the inn itself — unhurried, comfortable, and just a little removed from the mainland hustle. You're not going to find anything that requires an explanation, and honestly, that's probably the point. This is Shelter Island, and the list reads like it knows where it is.

Selection Deep Dive

A 100-150 bottle list anchored in California and France, this is a roster of crowd-friendly heavyweights rather than deep cuts. Jordan Cab, Caymus, Duckhorn Merlot, Stag's Leap — these are names you recognize from a steakhouse wine list, and they show up here with enough conviction that it doesn't feel lazy. Louis Jadot handles the French side of the ledger, which is safe but perfectly serviceable for a waterfront inn on Long Island. What's missing is any real regional personality — you'd expect at least a nod to North Fork producers given the address, and that absence is a quiet missed opportunity.

By the Glass

Ten to sixteen pours by the glass at $12–$18 is a respectable spread for a property of this size. Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay almost certainly anchors the white side, which is a crowd-pleaser that works well enough against the lobster bisque. The glass program feels steady rather than exciting — don't expect rotation or weekly surprises, but you won't be stuck drinking house plonk either.

💰Best Value

Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot — $70

Duckhorn Merlot consistently retails in the $45–$55 range, and a fair restaurant markup here keeps it accessible. It's a genuinely polished wine — plush, structured, not a pushover — and it fits the setting perfectly without breaking the evening.

💎Hidden Gem

Louis Jadot Burgundy

Most tables at a place like this reach for the California reds on autopilot. The Jadot is quieter on the list but earns its place — proper Burgundy character at a price that doesn't sting, and it drinks beautifully against the pan-seared duck breast in a way the Cab crowd will never know they missed.

Skip This

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

Caymus is everywhere, and it's priced accordingly everywhere too. The markup on a bottle this ubiquitous rarely makes sense at a restaurant — you're paying for a name that's already built into the retail price. The Jordan Cab is a better call at this table for less.

🍽️Perfect Pairing

Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + Filet mignon

Jordan is the definition of a food wine — it's got enough structure to stand up to the beef without steamrolling it, and that signature Alexander Valley elegance keeps things from getting heavy. Classic pairing, executed well, right place for it.

✔️ The Bottom Line

The Rams Head Inn's wine list won't blow your mind, but it's honest, fairly priced, and well-matched to the kind of evening you're actually having there — slow, scenic, and a ferry ride away from everything else. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence is earned; this is a list that was put together with care, even if it plays it safe.
