Wingman Metrics
The Barn leans hard into its identity — this is a steakhouse wine list built for people who want a big red with their ribeye and are not interested in being challenged. The list is focused, readable, and deliberately unsurprising, which is either exactly what you want or a mild disappointment depending on your mood.
Napa Cabernet is the clear center of gravity here, with multiple producers represented across the big, extracted style that steakhouse crowds expect. Spain gets a respectable nod with some well-aged Rioja in the mix, and France shows up via the Rhône, anchored by Domaine Bois de Boursan's organically farmed Châteauneuf-du-Pape — the most interesting bottle on the list by a wide margin. If you drink white wine or want anything lighter than a middleweight red, you're going to feel underserved; this list was not built with you in mind.
The by-the-glass program runs an estimated 10–16 options, skewing predictably toward full-bodied reds with a Coravin setup that lets you access higher-tier bottles by the small pour — a genuinely useful feature at a steakhouse where you might want a taste of something special without committing to a full bottle. Glass prices land in standard Chicago steakhouse territory, which is to say not cheap, but not highway robbery either.
Well-Aged Rioja — null
Aged Rioja at a steakhouse is criminally underordered, and here it's likely one of the more fairly priced bottles on the list relative to what's in the glass. Ripe fruit, leather, tobacco — everything that works with a cut of beef, without the Napa premium.
Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Organically farmed, complex, and a genuine departure from the Napa-Napa-Napa pattern of the rest of the list. Most tables here will walk right past it. Don't be those tables.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (entry-level tier)
The lower-end Napa Cabs on this list are the bottles where steakhouse markup does the most damage — you're paying a significant premium for wines you could grab at Binny's for $18. Step up to the Rioja or the Bois de Boursan and your wallet will feel better about the evening.
Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape + Prime Ribeye
A Grenache-driven CdP has the structure to stand up to the fat and char of a ribeye without the aggressive tannins that can make a big Cab feel like it's arm-wrestling your steak. It's a smarter pairing than the obvious Napa pick, and the organic farming adds a freshness that keeps the whole thing from feeling too heavy.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The Barn does exactly what it sets out to do — deliver a no-fuss, big-red-forward wine list in a clubby, comfortable room. It's not a destination for wine lovers, but if you're coming for a serious steak and want something reliable in the glass, you'll leave satisfied.
Downtown Evanston · Evanston · American Bistro / Contemporary American
Evanston Corner Bistro isn't trying to be a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — but the Wednesday half-price bottle program and honest pricing make it a genuinely solid neighborhood option. Show up on a Wednesday with a friend, order the Gruet, and stop overthinking it.

Le Tour is quietly doing something better than most of its suburban peers — a focused, French-leaning list with genuine producers that rewards the curious diner. Markups keep it from a higher badge, but this is absolutely worth ordering wine at.

Main Street District / South Evanston · Evanston · New American Pop-Up
The retail pricing model alone makes this one of the most honest wine programs in Evanston — you're getting shop prices with a dinner attached. If Libertad has a pop-up on the calendar, check what's open behind the counter and say yes to the Ayres.
