RagingWine reviewed Swirl on the Squareβs wine list and gave it The Wild Card β RagingWineβs Vibe-Check rating. How RagingWine reviews wine lists β
Wingman Metrics
Walking into Swirl on the Square feels like the Livermore Valley's wine country finally got a casual downtown outpost β exposed brick, live music on weekends, and a list that leans hard into local producers. The room is relaxed, the vibe is neighborhood-bar-meets-tasting-room, and the wine list is short enough to read in under two minutes. That's not a complaint β it's a mission statement.
Fourteen labels is a tight list, but Swirl earns points for keeping it local and intentional rather than padding it out with generic California supermarket staples. Wood Family Vineyards holds a prominent spot, representing the kind of small-production Livermore Valley winemaking that most people outside the Bay Area haven't discovered yet. The broader regional and international selections are less defined β we'd love to see more transparency about what else is on the list beyond the house pours. Still, for a wine bar that doubles as a community gathering spot, the focus on Livermore AVA wines is a genuine differentiator.
All 14 wines are available by the glass, which is the right call for a tapas format where you want to mix, match, and order multiple rounds. Pours are priced around $13β$14, which is fair for the market and keeps the evening from getting expensive fast. We'd like to see more rotation here β a static by-the-glass program that never changes is a missed opportunity to showcase what Livermore Valley producers are doing across different vintages.
Swirl House Whites & RosΓ© β $13/glass, $48/bottle
At $13 a glass for house pours focused on local Livermore Valley production, you're getting a taste of a genuinely underrated wine region at a price that won't make you wince. Order a bottle and split it across the table with a charcuterie board β that's the move.
Wood Family Vineyards Merlot
Most people walk past Livermore Merlot without a second thought, conditioned by years of coastal California Cab dominance. That's a mistake. Wood Family's version is a small-production local pour that drinks with more personality than its modest reputation suggests β and at $14 a glass, it's worth the detour.
Wood Family Vineyards Merlot (bottle)
The wine itself is worth drinking β but ordering the bottle at $52 when retail runs around $30 is a 73% markup that stings. Stick to the glass pour at $14 and spend the difference on another round of small plates.
Swirl House RosΓ© + Southwestern Flatbread
The smoky, spiced flavors of the Southwestern flatbread need something with enough brightness and fruit to cut through without amplifying the heat β a dry local rosΓ© does exactly that, and keeps the whole thing feeling effortlessly California casual.
π² The Bottom Line
Swirl on the Square isn't trying to be a destination wine bar and it doesn't need to be β it's the right place to drink local, eat small plates, and let a Tuesday night turn into something. Just order by the glass and skip the bottle markup.
Downtown Livermore Β· Livermore Β· Italian, Seafood, Grill
Strizzi's isn't a wine destination, but it does right by its neighborhood with local Livermore pours at fair prices. Send your friend here if they want a solid Italian dinner with a decent glass β just point them toward the Cab Franc.

Blue Agave Club is first and foremost a tequila destination, but the wine list earns its place by betting on local Livermore producers and sneaking in a wild card or two. If you're eating here and skipping the wine entirely, you're missing a cheap way to drink well in wine country.
