When a 40-year-old mountain bistro hands you a list with 400+ selections and a dedicated Cruvinet program, you know someone back there actually cares. This isn't the obligatory wine list that most ski-town restaurants phone in — it's a real program with real thought behind it. The breadth alone puts Sweet Basil in a different conversation than anything else on Gore Creek Drive.
France anchors the list hard — Burgundy, Champagne, Rhône, and Loire all get serious representation, with names like Michel Vattan's 'O.P' Sancerre and Bernard Defaix Chablis showing genuine range beyond the obvious. California holds its own with Kosta Browne and Larkmead 'Estate' Cabernet representing the high-end Napa and Russian River contingent. Italy gets a thoughtful nod too — G.D. Vajra's Nebbiolo Langhe is the kind of pick that signals a buyer with range, not just a distributor's checklist. Spain rounds it out, though that section feels thinner relative to the depth elsewhere.
Twenty-two total pours if you count the four Cruvinet specials, which you absolutely should — that's where the list gets interesting. Standard BTG runs $13–$25 with solid options across bubbles, whites, and reds; the Cruvinet tier bumps to $32–$35 and is worth the premium for the preservation and access to wines that rarely see a by-the-glass program. Eighteen core options is a generous spread for any restaurant, let alone one at 8,150 feet.
Jordan Chardonnay Russian River Valley — $22/glass
Jordan Chardonnay is a benchmark bottle that retails around $25–$28, so $22 a glass is aggressive pricing for a Vail restaurant — but it drinks beautifully at altitude and gives you real Russian River character without the Kosta Browne tax.
G.D. Vajra Nebbiolo Langhe
Most tables will reach for the Napa Cab or the Kosta Browne Pinot, and this Vajra Nebbiolo gets overlooked every time. That's a mistake. It's a lighter-boned, high-acid red that actually handles rich mountain food better than the bigger California options — and Vajra is one of Piemonte's most respected producers.
NV Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne (375ml)
At $95 for a half bottle, you're deep into 'ski town markup' territory. Ruinart BdB is excellent Champagne, but paying full-bottle money for 375ml feels like a Gore Creek tax. Spend that same $95 further down the list and you'll drink better.
Michel Vattan 'O.P' Sauvignon Blanc Sancerre + Snake River Wagyu Ribeye Filet with rosemary crushed potatoes and broccolini
Counterintuitive, but hear us out — the high acidity and mineral snap of a Loire Sauvignon Blanc cuts through the Wagyu fat cleanly and makes the rosemary pop. It's the kind of pairing a good sommelier recommends when you're tired of the obvious 'steak plus Cab' move.

Sweet Basil is the best wine list in Vail by a wide margin — 400 bottles, a real Cruvinet program, and a sommelier who put actual thought into the selections. The markups sting, but that's mountain dining; the quality justifies the trip.

Fall Line is the Wild Card this badge was invented for — a laid-back ski town spot with a wine list that would hold its own at a proper wine bar. The markups sting a little, but the depth and curation are real, and having a knowledgeable person on the floor to help navigate it makes all the difference.

Elway's Vail is a reliable steakhouse wine list doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep resort guests happy with names they recognize at prices that sting but don't shock. If you're after exploration, skip it — but if you want a solid California Cab with your prime ribeye after a day on the mountain, it gets the job done.

Alpenrose is a Wild Card in the best sense: a small, themed list that actually commits to its bit, with a few genuinely rare pours you won't find anywhere else in Vail. Markups are steep and the program could use more energy, but if you're eating schnitzel and drinking Austrian Zweigelt in a Bavarian chalet at 8,150 feet, that's not nothing.

Golden Eagle Inn is the kind of reliable mountain wine list that won't embarrass you on a date or a client dinner, but it'll charge you for the altitude at every turn. The Brunello and the Bouchard Beaune are genuine bright spots — find those, skip the Veuve, and you'll have a good night.

The Hudson isn't going to make any wine lists for its wine list, but it's a solid, competent program for what this place is — a lively upscale-casual spot where the views are doing a lot of the work. Send your friends here for dinner and tell them to stick to the bottles under $70.

The Cove is doing more than its hotel-restaurant status requires, and the Greek and Loire picks alone are worth a second look. It's not a destination wine list, but for Canandaigua lakefront dining, you'll drink well here.

The Lodge surprises — in the best way — with a wine list that has no business being this considered at a neighborhood golf course restaurant in the Sierra. Worth the detour if you're in Truckee and want something more than a grocery store Cabernet with your ribeye.
