The State Room is the kind of wine list that doesn't surprise you — and knows it. Housed inside the Kellogg Center on MSU's campus, the list reads like it was built to satisfy a hotel guest who wants something recognizable without breaking the bank. Bottle prices top out around $90, which keeps things accessible even if it limits the ceiling.
The 40-70 bottle list leans heavily on California and the Pacific Northwest, with a nod to Michigan producers that gives it some regional personality. You'll find workhorses like Rodney Strong Cabernet and Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay sitting next to Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling — dependable names that won't offend anyone at a faculty dinner. The Michigan presence is the most interesting corner of this list, but it's not developed enough to carry the room. There are no real deep cuts here, no grower Champagne, no small-production anything — just a well-curated set of crowd-pleasers that does its job.
Eight to twelve pours by the glass in the $10–$16 range is a reasonable spread for a hotel dining room at this price point. Expect the usual suspects — the Meiomi Pinot Noir will always be on this list — but the glass program is functional rather than exciting. Don't come here hoping for a rotating natural wine or an obscure Willamette Valley pour; come here knowing what you want and you'll be fine.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling — $35
Ste. Michelle consistently overdelivers at its price point, and in a list this California-forward, the Riesling stands out as both a value buy and the most food-versatile bottle on the menu.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Most tables at a hotel fine-dining room are reaching for the Cabernet or Chardonnay without a second look. The Riesling gets ignored, which is a mistake — it has the acidity to cut through richer dishes and the fruitiness to play well with lighter ones.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
You can find KJ Chard at every grocery store in Michigan for around $14 a bottle. Paying restaurant markup for something this ubiquitous is a tough sell when there are better options on the same list.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling + Great Lakes Whitefish
The Riesling's bright acidity and stone fruit character is a natural counterpart to the delicate, slightly sweet flesh of Great Lakes Whitefish — it lifts the dish without overpowering it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The State Room is a reliable, inoffensive wine program that serves its audience — hotel guests, university events, and MSU parents — without asking too much of anyone. You won't discover your next favorite producer here, but you also won't feel ripped off, and that's more than you can say for a lot of hotel dining rooms.

El Azteco is a beloved college-town institution, and the wine list knows its place — it's there so you can technically order wine, not because anyone thought hard about it. Stick to the margaritas; they're the real program here.

Beggar's Banquet is a beloved East Lansing institution and the wine list reflects that — it's comfortable, familiar, and a little overpriced. Come on a Wednesday when half-price bottles make the steep markups survivable, order the bubbles, and remember that the beer list is probably the real reason everyone keeps coming back.

Zoobie's isn't where you go to geek out on wine, but if you're meeting friends for dinner in Old Town and someone at the table insists on a glass, you won't be stuck with regret. Grab the Malbec or the Mawby rosé, let everyone else argue about the beer list.
