You walk into Santo Cielo and the setting does a lot of heavy lifting — rooftop energy, sunset light, a downtown Naperville crowd dressed to be seen. The wine list doesn't quite match the ambition of the room, but it's not embarrassing either. Think polished surface, modest depth.
From what we can gather, the list leans on safe international ground — New Zealand and Italy appear to be the guiding stars, which is a reasonable framework if executed well. The problem is the list seems to stop there, without much adventurousness beyond those comfort zones. There's no indication of a curator with a strong point of view pushing into lesser-known producers or regions. For a spot with this much visual personality, the wine program feels like it was assembled by committee rather than by anyone who genuinely cares about what's in the glass.
By-the-glass options aren't well documented, but given the vibe and the price point of the food menu, expect the usual suspects — a Sauvignon Blanc, maybe a Pinot Grigio, a crowd-friendly red or two. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority here, so don't count on anything surprising showing up on a Tuesday. If you're hoping for a discovery pour, temper those expectations.
The Bottom Line
Santo Cielo is a great place to have a drink — the atmosphere earns that — but the wine list isn't the reason you're going. Come for the rooftop and the small plates; just don't expect the wine program to match the view.
