Wingman Metrics
You don't expect to find Pétrus and Domaine Serafin Charmes-Chambertin on a rooftop wine list in McAllen, Texas — but here we are. The list opens like a flex, running from a $25 Bogle Merlot all the way up to a $5,000 Pétrus 2014, and somehow that range feels intentional rather than random. This is a wine program with ambition, even if the execution has some rough edges.
The list leans heavily Napa and Champagne, which tracks for a steakhouse crowd, but there are genuinely interesting detours: Reynvaan Grenache Blanc from Walla Walla, Hirsch Reid Lamm Grüner Veltliner from Kamptal, a J.J. Prüm Auslese from the Mosel, and Alvaro Palacios L'Ermita from Priorat. The prestige Champagne section is stacked — Krug 2008, Cristal 2014, Dom Pérignon Rosé 2006, La Grande Dame 2012 — suggesting someone here takes bubbles seriously. Old World coverage is spotty outside of France and Spain, and Italy gets reduced to trophy bottles like Masseto and Solaia rather than anything approachable. Still, for McAllen, this list is a legitimate surprise.
Seventeen by-the-glass options gives you real room to explore, with a price range spanning $9 to $38. That's a solid count for a rooftop steakhouse, though we'd want to see more rotation and transparency about what's actually being poured fresh versus sitting open too long. The glass program would benefit from a couple more Old World entries to balance out the California-heavy pours.
Craggy Range 'Te Muna' Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024 — $40/btl
Craggy Range's Te Muna is consistently one of the better values in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc — precise, structured, and a step above the obvious Cloudy Bay crowd. At $40 a bottle on a list where things escalate fast, this is the move before your steak arrives.
Reynvaan Grenache Blanc Walla Walla Valley 2020
Most people at a Texas steakhouse are scanning for Chardonnay or Cabernet — they're sleeping on this Walla Walla Grenache Blanc. Reynvaan is a serious producer making wines that punch well above their recognition level, and this is the kind of bottle that makes you feel like you found something.
Laurent Perrier Brut NV
At $150 a bottle, Laurent Perrier Brut NV is a hard sell when you can find it at retail for around $40-45. That's a brutal markup for a non-vintage entry-level Champagne. For roughly the same spend, the list gives you better options.
Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 + Prime Steak
Altamura is a Napa Cab built for exactly this moment — dense, structured, with the tannin backbone to cut through a well-marbled prime cut. At $125, it's not cheap, but it's actually one of the more honest prices on a list that can get aggressive quickly.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Santa Fe Cantina Rooftop has no business having a wine list this interesting in McAllen — and that's a compliment. The markups on Champagne will sting, but if you're strategic about your picks, there's real drinking to be done here.

Cheddar's is a solid spot for a Monte Cristo and a cold beer — but the wine program is a corporate afterthought dressed up as a list. Order a cocktail, tip your server well, and save the wine for somewhere that earned it.

P.F. Chang's McAllen isn't a destination for wine lovers, but the list is thoughtfully assembled for what it is — a chain that actually considered food-pairing when building it. Order a Riesling, get the Lettuce Wraps, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Macaroni Grill McAllen isn't a wine destination, but Thursday's half-price bottle night makes it a reasonable call if you're already going for the pasta. Show up on a Wednesday and order cocktails instead.

This is the wine list of a restaurant that views wine as a line item, not a feature. Come for the pasta and the endless breadsticks — just don't expect the wine to be part of the story.

Texas de Brazil McAllen isn't a wine destination, but it's not a wine disaster either — the list is overpriced in spots and short on imagination, but the anchor bottles are solid enough to carry a big carnivore night. Send your friend here for the meat; just tell them to reach for the Malbec and skip the Pinot Grigio.
