The wine list at Pizza Olympia isn't trying to impress anyone, and that's oddly refreshing. It's a straightforward lineup built to complement a family meal of calamari and calzone — nothing more, nothing less. What keeps it interesting is the genuine Greek representation, which you don't see at many pizza joints in Anchorage, or anywhere else for that matter.
The list runs about 25 labels split between California workhorses, Italian staples, and a small but meaningful Greek contingent. You've got your Bolla Valpolicella and Villa Banfi Chianti Classico holding down the Italian side, while Boutari White and Boutari Red fly the Greek flag alongside a Mavrodaphne that most diners here will have never encountered. California brings the familiar faces — Clos Du Bois Merlot, Parducci Cab, Louis Martini Cab — and yes, Sutter Home White Zinfandel is on there, because this is a family place and not everyone showed up for a Burgundy deep-dive. The gaps are obvious: no rosé to speak of, no sparkling beyond what Lambrusco Riunite offers, and the list hasn't evolved much in a while.
Three house pours is a tight program — expect a red, a white, and possibly a blush depending on the night. There's no rotation to speak of and no real excitement here, but the pours are honest and the price is right for a neighborhood pizza spot. If you want something specific off the bottle list, just ask.
Boutari Red (Greece) — null
A legitimate Greek red from one of the country's most respected producers, served at a pizza joint in Spenard. Whatever they charge for it, it almost certainly overdelivers — Boutari makes clean, food-friendly wines that punch above their price point, and it's a rare find in this market.
Mavrodaphne (Greece)
Most people gloss right past this one, assuming it's some obscure oddity. It's not — Mavrodaphne is a rich, slightly sweet Greek red with dried fruit and a savory edge that's genuinely interesting. Order it with something hearty and feel a little smug about it.
White Zinfandel, Sutter Home
Look, no judgment on anyone who loves it, but you're at a place with actual Greek wines on the list. This is a hard pass when there are more interesting options sitting right next to it.
Chianti Classico, Villa Banfi (Italy) + Calamari
Chianti Classico's bright acidity and savory backbone cut right through the richness of fried calamari and play nicely with any lemon or marinara on the side. It's a classic combo for a reason, and Villa Banfi is a reliable hand at this style.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Pizza Olympia isn't a wine destination, but it's an honest one — and the Greek selections alone make it worth ordering a bottle instead of defaulting to beer. If you're eating here anyway, the wine list will treat you right.
Downtown · Anchorage · New American
The Marx Brothers Café is the kind of place that makes you reconsider your assumptions about where serious wine lives. In a historic Anchorage bungalow, they've built a list that would hold its own in San Francisco — and that earns every bit of the Wild Card badge.

Crush earns its Wild Card badge not by being perfect, but by being genuinely surprising — a 600-bottle cellar and 40+ glass pours in Anchorage is an achievement worth acknowledging out loud. If you're passing through or living here, this is where you go when you actually care what's in your glass.

Girdwood · Anchorage · Winery Restaurant / Taproom
Bear Creek Winery Loft earns its Wild Card badge honestly — it's not trying to be a serious wine destination and doesn't need to be. If you're in Girdwood and you skip this in favor of a hotel bar pour, you've made a mistake you'll regret when you're back home explaining why you didn't try the rhubarb wine made in Alaska.

Tequila 61° is a genuinely fun downtown Anchorage spot — but the wine list is not the reason to come. Order the tequila, drink the margaritas, and if someone at the table insists on wine, steer them toward the Pinot Grigio and move on.

Texas de Brazil Anchorage is a reliable enough wine stop if you calibrate expectations to match the format — this is a chain steakhouse, not a wine destination, and the list behaves accordingly. Grab the Catena, eat a lot of picanha, and don't overthink it.

Bear Tooth Grill is a legitimately great spot for beer, margaritas, pizza, and a movie — the wine list is just a formality. Order a craft beer, skip the wine entirely, and you'll have a fantastic time.
