First Impression
Walking into Metro Wines feels more like a well-curated bottle shop than a wine bar, which makes sense because that's exactly what it is. The retail shelves tell you everything: this is a neighborhood spot that takes wine seriously without the pretense, stocking bottles you'd actually want to drink on a Tuesday.
Selection Deep Dive
The list skews toward accessible drinking—think French Côtes du Rhône, Spanish Garnacha, domestic Pinot Noir from Oregon and California's Central Coast. There's enough range to keep a regular coming back, with solid representation from Italy (Barbera, Nero d'Avola) and a few natural wine options for the crunchy Asheville crowd. It's not a deep cellar situation, but they clearly stock what moves and what they believe in. Gaps exist in the high-end collector bottles and esoteric regions, but that's not the game they're playing.
By the Glass
By-the-glass pours rotate based on what they're opening for retail tastings and what's selling well in bottles. Expect a solid four to six options spanning white, red, and something sparkling or skin-contact if you're lucky. The pours are generous and fairly priced for a shop doing double-duty as a bar.
Domaine de la Mordorée 'La Dame Rousse' Côtes du Rhône — $28
Classic Grenache-Syrah blend that drinks way above its price point—herb-driven, spicy, perfect with charcuterie
Clos Cibonne Tibouren Rosé
Not your pool party pink—this Provence outlier has structure and savory depth that most people skip because they think all rosé is candy
Generic domestic Chardonnay over $35
When a shop has this much interesting juice, overpaying for butter-bomb California Chard is a missed opportunity
Command Morgon Beaujolais + Cheese and charcuterie board
Light-bodied Gamay with bright cherry fruit cuts through fat and complements both funky cheese and cured meat without overwhelming
✔️ The Bottom Line
Metro Wines won't blow your mind with rare allocations, but it's exactly what a neighborhood wine spot should be: approachable, fairly priced, and stocked by people who care. Come for a bottle, stay for a glass, leave smarter than when you walked in.
