The wine list at La Bella Vita is short, approachable, and clearly designed for people who want something Italian with their pasta without overthinking it. Twenty-three labels isn't a lot, but the price ceiling of $45 a bottle means nobody's walking out feeling gouged. It's a neighborhood Italian spot doing neighborhood Italian wine things — and largely doing them right.
The list leans Italian, which is the correct call for a restaurant like this: you've got Chianti from both Placido and Santa Cristina, a Fontanafredda Barbera from Piedmont, and the Marchesi Antinori Toscana Bianco flying the Italian white flag. Beyond Italy, the list hedges toward safe crowd-pleasers — J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cab, Trapiche Broquel Malbec, Brancott Sauvignon Blanc — nothing adventurous but nothing offensive either. The Roscato Rosso Dolce is a curious inclusion, sweet red territory that will delight some guests and mystify others. What's missing: any real depth in sparkling or a proper Barolo or Brunello for the table that wants to celebrate.
Twenty-one of the 23 labels are available by the glass, which is almost the entire list — a genuinely generous pour program. Glass prices run $7–$12, putting a real bottle-quality wine within reach for anyone eating solo or splitting a flight across courses. The Placido Chianti and Placido Pinot Grigio anchor the bottom of the glass menu at $7 flat, which is hard to argue with.
Fontanafredda Barbera Bricco 2018 — $38
Fontanafredda is a legit Piedmontese producer, and a Barbera at $38 in a restaurant is a steal relative to what this wine can retail for. It's food-friendly, lower in tannin than a Barolo, and a natural fit with red sauce. Order it.
Marchesi Antinori Toscana Bianco 2019
Most people at an Italian restaurant default to Pinot Grigio without a second thought. The Antinori Toscana Bianco is a far more interesting glass — from one of Tuscany's most storied houses — and it'll make the food taste better. Most tables will walk right past it.
Stella Rosa Moscato 2020
At $40 a bottle, Stella Rosa is one of the most aggressively marked-up wines on this list relative to its retail price. It's a mass-market, lightly fizzy sweet wine that retails for well under $10. The restaurant is taking full advantage of its popularity.
Santa Cristina Superiore Chianti 2019 + Pasta with marinara or a classic red sauce
Chianti Superiore and red sauce pasta is one of those combinations that exists for a reason — the wine's acidity cuts through tomato, the Sangiovese base matches the savory weight of the dish, and the $40 bottle price is fair for a quality Santa Cristina. This is the move.
The Bottom Line
La Bella Vita's wine list won't make a wine geek's heart race, but it's fairly priced, almost entirely available by the glass, and leans into its Italian identity in the right places. Send a friend here if they want a solid glass of Chianti without a lesson.

For a hotel cantina in Las Cruces, this list earns genuine respect by putting New Mexico producers front and center instead of hiding behind safe California imports. If you're anywhere near Hatch chile country and haven't tried Gruet with your enchiladas, Garduños is a reasonable place to fix that.

Ristra isn't going to blow any wine obsessives away, but for a hotel restaurant in Las Cruces it's doing something genuinely worthwhile — championing local producers on a list that could have easily gone full lazy-California. Come for the green chile, order the Gruet, and leave more impressed with New Mexico wine than you expected to be.
