Wingman Metrics
You walk into a converted ice house in downtown Lodi and the first thing you notice is that nobody here is trying to impress you β the wines are doing that on their own. The list is short, estate-only, and anchored in old-vine fruit that most of California's flashier wine regions would kill to have. This is Lodi doing exactly what Lodi does best, and charging almost nothing for the privilege.
The portfolio runs 12β18 labels and stays firmly planted in Jessie's Grove's own estate blocks, which have been farmed since the 1890s. Old-vine Zinfandel is the headliner β the Royal Tee and the straight Old Vine bottling both pull from ancient, gnarly-kneed vines that make modern-planted fruit look like a weekend project. The Ancient Vine Carignane is the real conversation-starter: a grape most California drinkers associate with bulk blending, here showing what happens when the vines are over a century old. The RhΓ΄ne flank (Syrah, and the Westwind White blend) rounds things out without pretending to be something it's not.
Specific by-the-glass pour counts weren't available during our visit research, but the tasting flight format β typically running $15β$25 β effectively functions as a structured by-the-glass program that lets you work through the estate lineup without committing to a bottle blind. For a tasting room of this size, that's the right format. Retail bottle prices in the $20β$40 range mean that if something grabs you in the flight, you're not going to wince at the checkout.
Jessie's Grove Old Vine Zinfandel β $20β$40
Estate old-vine Zinfandel at tasting room retail in this price range is a legitimate steal. The vines are older than most California wineries, and the bottle price doesn't reflect that β which is entirely your gain.
Jessie's Grove Ancient Vine Carignane
Most people skip right past Carignane because the name doesn't ring any bells and it never gets the Zin spotlight. That's a mistake. Century-old Carignane from a single estate in Lodi produces something structured, earthy, and genuinely distinctive β and because nobody's fighting over it, it stays affordable.
Jessie's Grove Westwind White
Not a bad wine, but if you're making the trip to a historic old-vine estate in Lodi, a white blend is not why you came. Save the pour credit for the reds that actually tell the story of this property.
Jessie's Grove Royal Tee Old Vine Zinfandel + BBQ brisket
The Royal Tee has the dark fruit and backbone to stand up to smoky, fatty brisket without getting lost β and the old-vine concentration means it doesn't turn into a fruit bomb next to the char. Classic Lodi Zin and slow-smoked beef is about as natural a match as you'll find in California.
π² The Bottom Line
Jessie's Grove is the Wild Card answer to the question of where to drink in Lodi β a working estate with century-old vines, honest prices, and zero desire to be anything other than exactly what it is. If you're writing off Lodi as Zin country for your parents, this place will change your mind.

Twisted Barrel is a Wild Card in the best possible sense β a tiny Lodi room with a $23 flat-price ticket and a list that swings from Symphony to Tempranillo without breaking a sweat. If you think Lodi is just bulk Zinfandel country, this is the correction.

School Street Bistro is the Wild Card Lodi didn't know it needed β a farm-to-table casual spot that takes its local wine scene seriously enough to curate it, not just paper the list with generic California brands. Farmhouse Vineyards is doing something genuinely uncommon in Texas wine country β leaning hard into obscure European varieties with an estate-only focus and pricing that doesn't take advantage of the novelty.
