The wine list at Harpoon Larry's doesn't try to be something it's not — and that's actually a point in its favor. You're in a lively, no-pretense coastal seafood spot, and the list reads accordingly: recognizable names, approachable prices, nothing that requires a decoder ring. It's built for the person who wants a glass of something cold and white with a dozen oysters, not a cellar crawl.
The list runs about 20-35 labels with a tight focus on California, Washington State, and a nod to Virginia with the Williamsburg Winery Governor's White — which is a genuinely nice touch for a Newport News spot. You'll find the usual suspects: Raeburn Chardonnay, Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling, Joel Gott Cab, Drumheller Merlot. It's not adventurous, but every pick is a reliable crowd-pleaser that actually makes sense next to seafood. The gap here is anything from the Loire, Burgundy, or even a decent Albariño — wines that were basically invented to sit next to shellfish.
Eight to twelve pours by the glass is a solid count for this type of operation, and the $8–$14 price range keeps things accessible without feeling like a gas station pour. The selections track the bottle list closely — whites and a few reds, nothing rotating or adventurous, but at least there are options beyond a generic house Chardonnay.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling — $28
Washington Riesling at the low end of the bottle range is a steal next to a raw oyster platter. The off-dry profile cuts through brine and keeps things lively — this is exactly the right bottle for this restaurant at this price.
Williamsburg Winery Governor's White
Most people at this table will reach for the California Chardonnay on autopilot. Don't. The Governor's White is a Virginia-grown blend that flies under the radar, and ordering it here — a few miles from where it's made — is the kind of local move that actually pays off.
Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon
A big, oaky California Cab at a seafood joint is a mismatch from the jump. It's a fine bottle in the right context, but next to crab cakes and oysters it's just fighting everything on the plate. The markup isn't offensive, but there's no reason to order it here when there are better options for the food.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling + Raw Oysters
This is as close to a textbook pairing as you'll find on this list. The Riesling's bright acidity and hint of sweetness are practically calibrated for briny, cold-water oysters — they sharpen each other up without one bulldozing the other.
Wednesday — Half Off Wine Wednesday: House wines are half off from 11am to 9pm
✔️ The Bottom Line
Harpoon Larry's isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't need to be — the list is priced fairly, the glass count is generous, and Half Off Wine Wednesday is legitimately one of the better deals in Newport News. Send a friend here for oysters and a cold Riesling without hesitation.
Oyster Point / Jefferson Avenue · Newport News · Barbecue, American
Smoke BBQ is here for the brisket and the beer, and you should be too. The wine list is an afterthought dressed up in a single brand — come back on a Wednesday if you want cheap bottles to share, otherwise skip it entirely.

Cove Tavern isn't a wine destination, but it's a reliable neighborhood pour with enough recognizable labels and a strong by-the-glass program to keep wine drinkers happy between bites of a fish taco. Skip the Silver Oak, grab the Norton, and call it a win.

The Melting Pot Peninsula isn't a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — it's a date-night machine with a list built to move bottles of Meiomi and La Marca without friction. Order smart, keep your expectations calibrated, and let the chocolate fondue close the deal.

City Center / Oyster Point · Newport News · Traditional Italian
Al Fresco is a solid neighborhood Italian with a wine list that's bigger and more thoughtful than it needs to be — the Italian selections justify the visit, even if the markups on the California heavy-hitters sting a little. Send your friends here, but steer them toward Tuscany and away from the Napa trophy shelf.
