You don't expect a 100-plus bottle wine list when you're surrounded by old-growth trees in the middle of Clarion County, but here we are. Gateway Lodge has been holding a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2009 โ longer than most city restaurants keep their lights on. The list is approachable without being lazy, which is exactly what you want when you've just finished a hike and you're ready to eat venison by a fireplace.
The list leans on the reliable pillars โ France, Italy, California, and Spain โ and executes them without embarrassment. You'll find Louis Jadot anchoring the Burgundy section, Caymus and Jordan flying the California Cabernet flag, and Santa Margherita doing what Santa Margherita does on every Italian-leaning list in America. It's not a deep-cellar experience, but for a rural lodge dining room in western Pennsylvania, the range is genuinely solid. Spain and Italy feel a little thin compared to the French and California depth, but there's enough here to keep a curious drinker interested across multiple visits.
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a respectable showing for a property this remote โ most lodge restaurants phone it in with four Chardonnays and a Merlot. Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling showing up on that by-the-glass program is a smart, food-friendly call given the kitchen's affinity for trout and foraged ingredients. We'd love to see more rotation here, but what's on offer is chosen with some actual thought.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling โ $35
At the entry point of this list, the Ste. Michelle Riesling punches well above its price. It's crisp, off-dry, and absolutely built for the pan-seared trout and the wild mushroom dishes coming out of this kitchen. Hard to beat the value-to-food-match ratio here.
Louis Jadot Burgundy
Most people at a lodge in the Pennsylvania woods are reaching for the Caymus without a second thought. Don't. The Louis Jadot on this list is a legitimate old-world option that most tables will walk right past, and it's exactly the kind of lighter-bodied red that makes the venison medallions sing.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio
It's fine. It's always fine. But Santa Margherita at restaurant markup is one of the most reliably overpriced pours in American dining, and you can do better on this list. Pass.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + Prime Beef Tenderloin
Jordan is built for exactly this moment โ structured enough to stand up to a serious cut of beef but polished enough not to overpower it. Classic California Cab meets classic steakhouse centerpiece, executed in a log-cabin dining room. It works.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Gateway Lodge is a genuine surprise โ a forest retreat that actually takes its wine list seriously, holds a 15-year Wine Spectator credential, and prices fairly enough that you don't feel robbed after a relaxing weekend in the woods. If you're heading to Cook Forest, this is absolutely where you're drinking tonight.
