The wine list at Fire + Wine lands like a pleasant surprise — 62 labels doesn't sound like much, but whoever built this thing clearly has a point of view. It's heavily Italian-leaning with a smart sparkling program that punches well above what you'd expect from a suburban pizza spot. This isn't a list that was assembled by clicking 'reorder' on a distributor's bestseller sheet.
The white wine section is where this list earns its stripes. You've got Thierry Merlin-Cherrier Sancerre Blanc 2024 sitting alongside the Maculan 'Pino & Toi' — a blend of Friulano, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio that most Naperville diners will walk right past. The sparkling section is genuinely impressive: Laurent-Perrier 'La Cuvée' at $45 a bottle is a steal, and the inclusion of Bricco Riella Moscato d'Asti shows they're not afraid to go somewhere slightly unexpected. Reds are where the data gets thin for now, but the white and sparkling game more than carries the list. Geographic range skews Italian and French with some New World representation via Brooks Pinot Blanc out of Oregon and Truchard Estate Chardonnay from Napa.
Thirty by-the-glass options on a 62-label list is an unusually generous ratio — essentially half the cellar is open and pourable at any given moment. Glass prices run $12–$22, which keeps things accessible without giving anything away for free. The sparkling and rosé by-the-glass program is particularly strong, which tracks for a pizza and wine bar where you want something bright and high-acid to cut through the crust.
Laurent-Perrier 'La Cuvée' Brut Champagne — $45
Real Champagne — from one of the most consistent houses in the game — at $45 a bottle is genuinely hard to find at a restaurant. Retail on this sits around $35–40, so the markup is minimal. Order this over the Prosecco every single time.
Maculan 'Pino & Toi' Friulano/Pinot Bianco/Pinot Grigio 2024
Most tables will glance past a three-grape Friulian blend at a pizza place and reach for something familiar. That's a mistake. Maculan makes serious wine in Veneto, and 'Pino & Toi' is textured, aromatic, and built for food. At $44 a bottle it's one of the most interesting things on the list.
Wölffer Estate 'Summer in a Bottle' Still Rosé 2024
At $72 a bottle, you're paying a significant premium for a wine that's largely riding its Instagram-friendly label. It's a fine Hamptons rosé, but the Château Gassier at $52 is a more serious wine from the actual south of France and will drink better with food. Save the twenty bucks.
Arigolas 'Costamolino' Vermentino di Sardegna 2024 + Margherita pizza
Vermentino from Sardinia has a saline, citrus-driven edge with just enough bitterness on the finish to hold up against tomato acidity. It's a classic Italian pairing logic — regional wine, simple pizza — and the Costamolino at $52 is one of the better expressions of the grape you'll find outside of a dedicated Italian wine bar.
The Bottom Line
Fire + Wine is doing something genuinely thoughtful in a market that usually settles for Malbec and Pinot Grigio. The sparkling program alone is worth the trip, and the value on the French and Italian bottles is hard to argue with.
