You're in Moab — red rocks, Jeep tours, gas station burritos — and then you open Desert Bistro's wine list and do a double take. Sixty-plus labels, a crémant from Limoux, Elk Cove Pinot from the Willamette, Ridge Geyserville. This list has no business being this considered in a town better known for mountain biking than Burgundy.
The list leans heavily Pacific Northwest and California with smart detours into France and Spain that keep things from feeling like a generic steakhouse pour. The 2017 Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha from Campo de Borja is a genuine bright spot — it's a producer that earns its shelf space — alongside the 2018 Chateau St. Cosme Côtes du Rhône and the Château de la Liquière Faugères, which signal someone here is actually paying attention to the southern Rhône and Languedoc. Italy gets some coverage (Chianti, Barolo-adjacent selections) but feels thinner than the French and Northwest plays. The top end — Stag's Leap Artemis, Jordan Alexander Valley Cab, Duckhorn Merlot — gives the splurge crowd something to work with without tipping into pure trophy-wine territory.
Sixteen options is legitimately impressive for a restaurant in a town this size, and the range earns respect: you can get a New Mexico sparkling from Gruet, a dry Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle, or a glass of Elk Cove Pinot Noir without committing to a full bottle. Prices run $9–$18 a glass, which stays reasonable given the setting and the food price point. The rotation appears static rather than seasonal, but when the baseline list is this solid, that's a minor gripe.
2017 Bodegas Borsao 'Tres Picos' Garnacha — $34–$40 (bottle)
Tres Picos consistently punches well above its weight — it's a concentrated, food-friendly Garnacha from Campo de Borja that retails around $15-18, and even at a fair restaurant markup it's the best QPR on the list. Order it with the bison and don't look back.
2019 Château de la Liquière 'Les Amandiers' Faugères
Faugères is still flying under most people's radar despite being one of the Languedoc's most exciting appellations for Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre blends. Most diners at Desert Bistro will scroll past it for the Jordan or the Stag's Leap — that's their loss and your gain.
2019 Meiomi Pinot Noir
Meiomi is a mass-market, heavily blended California Pinot that shows up on every Applebee's-adjacent wine list in America. It's not offensively bad, but at restaurant prices you're paying a premium for something that costs $12 at Costco. The 2018 Elk Cove Pinot Noir is right there on the same list and it's not even close.
2018 Elk Cove Pinot Noir + Duck confit
Willamette Valley Pinot and duck is a classic for a reason — the wine's earthy red fruit and bright acidity cut through the richness of the confit without steamrolling it. Elk Cove specifically brings enough structure to hold up to the dish while staying elegant. This is the move.
The Bottom Line
For a fine-dining spot in the middle of canyon country, Desert Bistro's wine list is a genuine overachiever — fair prices, smart regional picks, and enough depth to reward the curious drinker. If you're road-tripping through Moab and need a proper meal with a proper bottle, this is where you stop.

For a cafe in the middle of the Utah desert, Jailhouse punches above its weight class on the wine front — fair markups, a nearly all-by-the-glass menu, and a couple of genuine highlights in the Gruet and the Jadot. If you're rolling in off a trail and want something better than a gas station beer, this list will take care of you.

Moab Brewery is a solid brewpub doing exactly what it should — pouring craft beer to dusty hikers and mountain bikers. The wine list is an afterthought, and that's fine, as long as you treat it like one. Order the beer. If someone at your table insists on wine, the Trapiche Malbec is probably your least-bad option, but don't come here for the wine.

Pasta Jay's wine list is a list in the most technical sense — it has wines on it, they cost money, you can order them. But with no whites, no rosé, steep markups on grocery-tier labels, and a selection that ignores most of Italy's wine country, it's hard to recommend anyone spend real money here on wine. Order the pasta, drink water, and save the bottle for somewhere that actually cares.

Castle Creek isn't competing with your favorite wine bar — it's competing with the view, and honestly both win. If you're driving Highway 128 and you don't stop here, you made a mistake.
