The wine list at Crab Shell is short, recognizable, and built entirely for the food — which, at a seafood spot in Stamford, is honestly the right call. Twenty-two labels, nothing adventurous, but the pricing is refreshingly honest. You won't find anything that requires a decoder ring, and that's kind of the point.
Whites dominate, as they should, with a handful of Pinot Grigios and Chardonnays doing most of the heavy lifting — think Santa Margherita, Chateau Ste. Michelle, and a Macon-Lugny for anyone who wants something with actual terroir. Reds are here mostly as an afterthought: a Columbia Crest H3 Cab, a Matua Pinot Noir, and a Gouguenheim Malbec round out a serviceable but predictable lineup. Rosé gets two solid entries in Whispering Angel and Notorious Pink. There are no deep-cellar surprises, no natural wines, no old-world rabbit holes — just approachable bottles priced to move.
Fifteen by-the-glass options at $9-$11 is genuinely generous for a casual seafood restaurant, and the range covers the bases: whites, reds, and presumably rosé. The pours skew toward house-level quality — the $9 Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay are clearly entry-tier — but the program makes wine accessible rather than intimidating, which counts for something.
Macon-Lugny Chardonnay — $32
Burgundian Chardonnay at $32 a bottle is a quiet win on a list full of California defaults. You're getting actual minerality and restraint instead of butter-bomb, and it's perfectly matched to anything coming out of the kitchen with a shell on it.
Gouguenheim Malbec
Nobody comes to a seafood restaurant looking for an Argentine Malbec, but at $22 a bottle it's a steal if you're splitting a surf-and-turf situation. Most people will walk right past it — their loss.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio
At $48 a bottle, you're paying almost entirely for the name. The Stellina di Notte Pinot Grigio does the same job for $25, and the Macon-Lugny runs the same price and actually has something interesting to say.
Macon-Lugny Chardonnay + Steamed Crab
Unoaked Burgundian Chardonnay and sweet, briny crab is a classic for a reason — the wine's natural acidity cuts through the richness while the subtle stone fruit plays off the sweetness of the crab meat.
The Bottom Line
Crab Shell's wine list won't win any awards, but it's priced fairly, matched to the menu, and doesn't try to be something it isn't. Send a friend here for cold seafood and a bottle of the Macon-Lugny — they'll be happy.
