Montana Beef, Napa Backup, No Surprises

Wingman Metrics
The wine list here is exactly what you'd expect from a casual Montana steakhouse — it's built to sell red wine to people ordering ribeyes, and it does that job without much fuss. There's no ambition to surprise you, but there's also no attempt to embarrass you with something undrinkable. It's the wine equivalent of the loaded mashed potatoes: familiar, reliable, gets the job done.
The list leans hard into California and Washington, with Napa Cabernet doing most of the heavy lifting — Caymus and Jordan show up like regulars at the bar, and Chateau Ste. Michelle holds down the Washington flank. Sonoma gets a seat at the table via Meiomi Pinot Noir, which is fine if you like your Pinot tasting like jam in a tuxedo. There's no real Old World representation to speak of, and if you're hoping for anything outside the major American appellations, you're going to be disappointed. For a steakhouse in Billings, it's serviceable, but the list plays it as safe as humanly possible.
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a respectable count for a casual spot, and the $10–$18 range won't require a second mortgage. The glass options mirror the bottle list — expect Cabernet-forward choices and crowd-friendly reds — so don't come looking for anything adventurous or rotating.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon — $40
Columbia Valley Cab at the low end of their bottle range is the move here — it's a solid, food-friendly red that won't feel stripped down next to a good steak, and you're not paying a Napa premium for it.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon
Jordan gets overshadowed by Caymus on lists like this because Caymus has better name recognition with casual diners, but Jordan's Sonoma Cab is actually the more interesting bottle — better structure, more restraint, and it holds up across a full dinner rather than bombing you with fruit in the first pour.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is everywhere, and restaurants know they can charge a premium because people recognize the name. At a steakhouse markup you're almost certainly paying well above retail for a wine that's become more about brand than what's in the glass. Save the money and apply it elsewhere on this list.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + 78 oz ribeye steak challenge
A Sonoma Cab with the structure and dark fruit of Jordan is exactly what a massive, well-marbled ribeye needs — the tannins cut through the fat and the wine doesn't get lost next to that much beef. If you're going to attempt the 78 oz challenge, at least drink well while you do it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Bull Mountain Grille is a trustworthy place to drink decent American red wine with a big steak in Billings — just don't come expecting discovery. If the list had fairer pricing and a shred of adventurousness, this could be something; instead it's exactly what it is, no more.

Outback's wine list is corporate on purpose — it's designed to be inoffensive, not interesting. Order the Koonunga Hill with your steak, and save your real wine curiosity for a restaurant that returns the favor.

The prices are shockingly low, and credit where it's due — but a steal on mediocre wine is still mediocre wine. Come for the Cheddar Bay Biscuits, skip the wine list, and save your real bottle for somewhere that cares.

Olive Garden's wine list is exactly what it is — a corporate-approved selection designed to sell bottles, not spark conversation. If you're here for the pasta and the breadsticks, fine; just don't expect the wine to be part of the story.

Texas Roadhouse Billings is not a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — but the gap between the quality of the food and the quality of the wine list is real. Order the Chateau Ste. Michelle, eat the rolls, and save your serious wine curiosity for somewhere that reciprocates it.

Bin 119 is the best wine answer Billings has, and that patio earns its reputation on atmosphere alone. The list could push harder on value and discovery, but as a reliable spot to drink well above your zip code's expectations, it absolutely delivers.

The Windmill Bar is a neighborhood bar that happens to have wine on the menu — and that's the extent of the relationship. Come for the Montana bar atmosphere and the cold drinks; leave the wine expectations at the door.

Proper Grit is a good-looking restaurant with a wine list that doesn't match its ambitions — steep markups on brands you can buy at Publix aren't a wine program, they're a tax on people not paying attention. Order a cocktail, or bring your own if the corkage is reasonable.

Harry's wine list won't blow anyone away, but a few smart picks buried in a short lineup make it more than just a bottle-of-Cab-before-the-steak situation. If you know where to look, you'll drink well enough — just don't expect the list to do the work for you.

Chop House does what a casino steakhouse wine list is supposed to do: it stocks the names people recognize, charges casino prices for them, and gets out of the way. If you're here for the prime ribeye and a bottle of Jordan, you'll leave happy — just don't look too hard at the markups.
