Wingman Metrics
The food here has a story to tell — lamb chops, brochettes, hummus that probably slaps — but the wine list reads like someone grabbed whatever was on sale at the grocery store and called it a day. For a Mediterranean bistro with a genuine regional cuisine, this is a swing and a miss. The list is a missed opportunity that doesn't come close to matching the kitchen's ambition.
The region focus is supposedly Spain, Italy, Southern France, and Greece, which sounds promising on paper — but the actual bottles on the list tell a different story. What we're looking at is a parade of mass-market supermarket brands: Apothic, Beringer, Jacob's Creek, Barefoot. There's no Rioja, no Greco di Tufo, no Côtes du Rhône, no Assyrtiko — nothing that actually echoes the cuisine on the plate. For a restaurant calling itself a Mediterranean bistro, the absence of any serious Mediterranean wine is frankly baffling.
The by-the-glass program runs an estimated 6-10 options, but when the bottles anchoring it are Barefoot Moscato and Beringer Main & Vine Chardonnay, that number stops being impressive. There's no rotation to speak of, no seasonal pours, nothing that suggests anyone is thinking hard about what's in the glass.
Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon — $40
At a 150% markup it's the least offensive option on a list full of bad deals — at least Hess Select is a recognizable, drinkable Napa Cab. It's the one bottle here that doesn't make you wince twice.
Mionetto Prosecco Brut
It's not exactly a discovery, but Prosecco with hummus and falafel is genuinely a good move — the bubbles and light fruit cut through the richness better than anything else on this list. At $34 it's still a markup, but at least the pairing logic holds up.
Barefoot Moscato
A 271% markup on a $7 retail bottle is the single worst deal on the list. This is the kind of wine you find in a gas station cooler. Pass entirely.
Mionetto Prosecco Brut + Hummus
The light effervescence and subtle fruitiness of the Prosecco play off the earthy, olive-oil-rich hummus in a way that nothing else on this list can. It's a simple move, but it works.
The Bottom Line
The kitchen is clearly doing its job — the wine list just isn't. Skip the bottle, order a cocktail, and hope the restaurant rethinks this list before your next visit.

Cheddar's is a solid spot for a Monte Cristo and a cold beer — but the wine program is a corporate afterthought dressed up as a list. Order a cocktail, tip your server well, and save the wine for somewhere that earned it.

P.F. Chang's McAllen isn't a destination for wine lovers, but the list is thoughtfully assembled for what it is — a chain that actually considered food-pairing when building it. Order a Riesling, get the Lettuce Wraps, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Macaroni Grill McAllen isn't a wine destination, but Thursday's half-price bottle night makes it a reasonable call if you're already going for the pasta. Show up on a Wednesday and order cocktails instead.

This is the wine list of a restaurant that views wine as a line item, not a feature. Come for the pasta and the endless breadsticks — just don't expect the wine to be part of the story.

Texas de Brazil McAllen isn't a wine destination, but it's not a wine disaster either — the list is overpriced in spots and short on imagination, but the anchor bottles are solid enough to carry a big carnivore night. Send your friend here for the meat; just tell them to reach for the Malbec and skip the Pinot Grigio.

Dametra is a lively Carmel institution that takes its bottle list more seriously than its casual vibe suggests — the markups sting, but the range is genuinely interesting and a few bottles here are worth seeking out. Send a friend who wants something special with dinner, just tell them to skip the Caymus.

Meridia has the setting, the concept, and the menu to deserve a genuinely interesting wine list — instead it serves up resort-hotel boilerplate at punishing markups. Order the paella, drink the cocktails, and save the serious wine for somewhere that cares.

Mediterranean Breeze is doing what it says on the tin — a relaxed room, recognizable bottles, and $6 glass pours that won't break anyone's budget. Skip the mid-tier markups, aim for Jordan or Kim Crawford, and you'll have a perfectly decent night.
