You walk into a brick-walled bar above the Ashland plaza, order a burger, and then notice Vega Sicilia Unico on the wine list. That's the whole review right there. This is not a wine bar — it's a casual gastropub that decided to take its list seriously, and the result is genuinely disorienting in the best way.
Twenty-nine labels sounds modest until you start reading them: Turley Zinfandel, Ridge Cab, Don Melchor, Bergstrom Reserve, and a bottle of Unico that belongs in a Michelin-starred cellar. The local Oregon angle is handled well too — Cowhorn Viognier from the Applegate Valley, Troon's biodynamic white blend, and Abecella Tempranillo from Umpqua give the list genuine regional identity. There's a small but smart white section anchored by Donkey & Goat Marsanne Roussanne and a Meursault 1er Cru that has no business being here (we mean that as a compliment). The gaps are real — no Pinot Gris, no Rosé worth noting, and the list skews heavily red — but what's here punches hard above a gastropub's weight class.
Ten options by the glass at $10–$14 is a fair range for a casual bar setting, and the Elk Cove LA Sirene Pinot Noir at $12 a glass is a legitimate pour. The glass list rotates enough interesting labels — Klinker Brick Syrah, Domaine Carneros Brut — to keep things interesting beyond the usual Cab-Chard-Malbec trio that plagues every neighborhood bar list.
Elk Cove LA Sirene Pinot Noir — $12/glass, $35/bottle
Elk Cove is a respected Willamette producer and $35 a bottle for their Pinot in a restaurant context is genuinely fair. At $12 a glass, this is the move if you're not committing to a bottle — and it's the kind of wine that makes the whole list feel credible.
Cowhorn Viognier Applegate Valley
Cowhorn is a certified biodynamic estate in the Applegate Valley doing serious work with Rhône varieties, and most people at this bar are going to walk right past it for the Malbec. That's a mistake. This is a wine with texture, personality, and a story — order it and feel smug about it.
Vega Sicilia Unico Ribera Del Duero
At $450 a bottle, this is a trophy listing, and we respect the ambition. But you're drinking it in a gastropub without the cellar provenance, service, or glassware to give it what it deserves. Save Unico for a room that was built for it.
Turley Zinfandel Paso Robles + Mac & cheese
Turley makes big, ripe, slightly jammy Zin that needs something rich and salty to slow it down. The mac & cheese is exactly that counterweight — the fat in the cheese sauce absorbs the heat, and the wine's fruit makes the whole thing taste like a cheat code.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Brickroom is a bar that accidentally became a sleeper wine destination — the list has no business being this interesting for a casual plaza spot above Ashland's tourist corridor. If you're in town for the Shakespeare Festival and want a bottle worth talking about, this is where to go.
