First Impression
Walking into a winery's own wine bar is either brilliant or a trap β and at Biltmore Estate, it's actually brilliant. The list leans heavy on estate bottlings (obviously), but the real surprise is the depth and range they've coaxed from North Carolina fruit. This isn't your grandma's Concord grape situation.
Selection Deep Dive
Biltmore's been making wine since 1985, and their estate program shows serious ambition. You're looking at everything from classic French varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to more adventurous Southern picks like Viognier and Cabernet Franc. The estate bottles dominate, but they've smartly woven in some comparable regional and international selections to give context. It's a chance to see what North Carolina wine can do when there's real money and intention behind it. The red program focuses on Bordeaux varietals and blends, while whites lean French β Chardonnay, Riesling, bubbles.
By the Glass
Glass pours run the gamut from approachable estate whites to reserve-level reds, typically 6-8 options rotating seasonally. They're not shy about pouring their top-tier stuff by the glass, which is refreshing β you can try the ChΓ’teau Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon without committing to a full bottle. Pours are generous, and staff actually knows the vineyards these come from.
Biltmore Estate Century Chardonnay β $38
French oak-aged estate Chardonnay that drinks like a $55 bottle from anywhere else β balanced, not over-oaked, actually food-friendly
Biltmore Reserve Sangiovese
Nobody expects Italian varietals in North Carolina, but this estate Sangiovese has bright acidity and cherry notes that work beautifully β proof the team isn't just playing it safe
Entry-level Cardinal's Crest Red Blend
Perfectly drinkable but you're at the source β skip the gateway bottle and go for something that shows what the estate can actually do
Biltmore Blanc de Blancs Sparkling + Estate-raised trout with lemon butter
NC mountain trout and estate bubbles β the acidity cuts through the butter while complementing the delicate fish, and it's the most 'Asheville' pairing possible
π² The Bottom Line
This is a Wild Card because it's an estate winery that actually delivers on quality and doesn't just coast on the Vanderbilt name. You're drinking wines made literally on the property, and the program has real ambition. Worth the tourist-trap risk.
