Walking into a winery's own wine bar is either brilliant or a trap β and at Biltmore Estate, it's actually brilliant. The list leans heavy on estate bottlings (obviously), but the real surprise is the depth and range they've coaxed from North Carolina fruit. This isn't your grandma's Concord grape situation.
Biltmore's been making wine since 1985, and their estate program shows serious ambition. You're looking at everything from classic French varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to more adventurous Southern picks like Viognier and Cabernet Franc. The estate bottles dominate, but they've smartly woven in some comparable regional and international selections to give context. It's a chance to see what North Carolina wine can do when there's real money and intention behind it. The red program focuses on Bordeaux varietals and blends, while whites lean French β Chardonnay, Riesling, bubbles.
Glass pours run the gamut from approachable estate whites to reserve-level reds, typically 6-8 options rotating seasonally. They're not shy about pouring their top-tier stuff by the glass, which is refreshing β you can try the ChΓ’teau Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon without committing to a full bottle. Pours are generous, and staff actually knows the vineyards these come from.
Biltmore Estate Century Chardonnay β $38
French oak-aged estate Chardonnay that drinks like a $55 bottle from anywhere else β balanced, not over-oaked, actually food-friendly
Biltmore Reserve Sangiovese
Nobody expects Italian varietals in North Carolina, but this estate Sangiovese has bright acidity and cherry notes that work beautifully β proof the team isn't just playing it safe
Entry-level Cardinal's Crest Red Blend
Perfectly drinkable but you're at the source β skip the gateway bottle and go for something that shows what the estate can actually do
Biltmore Blanc de Blancs Sparkling + Estate-raised trout with lemon butter
NC mountain trout and estate bubbles β the acidity cuts through the butter while complementing the delicate fish, and it's the most 'Asheville' pairing possible
π² The Bottom Line
This is a Wild Card because it's an estate winery that actually delivers on quality and doesn't just coast on the Vanderbilt name. You're drinking wines made literally on the property, and the program has real ambition. Worth the tourist-trap risk.
Downtown Asheville Β· Asheville Β· Farm to Table
The Blackbird is doing wine right in a town that's more known for craft beer β there's a real sommelier (Sarah Reder) behind this list and it shows. Send your wine-curious friends here without hesitation.

Vue 1913 is a reliable wine destination for guests who know what they like and want to drink it with a jaw-dropping view β just don't expect the list to push you anywhere new. Send your California Cab-loving friends here without hesitation; send your natural wine friends somewhere else.

Grove Park Β· Asheville Β· Regional
Sunset Terrace isn't a wine destination β it's a destination where wine happens to be available and handled competently. Come for the mountains and the steak, order the Ridge or the Sonoma-Cutrer, and enjoy the fact that at least nobody's pouring you something terrible.

Jargon is doing something real with wine in a neighborhood that doesn't demand it, and that's exactly why it deserves your attention. Send a friend here β just tell them to skip the Napa Cab and ask about the Minervois.

The Dining Room is genuinely worth the trip, and not just because of the mansion backdrop β the sommelier team is real, the cellar is serious, and Wednesday half-price wine night turns a splurge into a steal. Markups on the prestige bottles are steep, but the overall program earns its Best of Award of Excellence.

Jerusalem Garden Cafe does Middle Eastern food well, but the wine program is non-existent. Stick to the Turkish coffee or mint tea and save your wine budget for literally anywhere else in Asheville.

Vin Atl is doing something most Atlanta wine bars aren't: curating a short list with genuine intention instead of padding it with safe bets. At these prices, it's worth a stop even if you only come for one bottle.

Legacy West Β· Plano Β· Wine Bar
CRΓ Plano punches well above its Legacy West strip-mall setting β 300 bottles and a genuinely active specials calendar make this worth a dedicated visit, not just a last-resort pour before the movie. Just don't come looking for Burgundy and you'll leave happy.

The Cask is a genuinely pleasant place to spend an evening β the vibe is right, the crowd is friendly, and the bar snacks do their job. But the wine list is overpriced brand recognition, not a curated program, and no amount of Tuesday specials changes the math on a $40 Josh Cellars.
