You're sitting down to Pho Lao and lettuce wraps in one of Raleigh's most interesting dining rooms, and the wine list is shorter than you'd expect but more considered than it has any right to be. It's not trying to be a wine bar β it's trying to give you something to drink with bold, herbaceous, funky Laotian food, and it mostly succeeds. The range of whites especially suggests someone thought about the cuisine when they built this list.
Thirty to fifty bottles covering Italy, France, New Zealand, California, and Spain β which sounds unfocused until you realize the throughline is mostly aromatic whites and lighter reds that won't steamroll the food. The Massican Annia, a Tocai Friulano-led blend from Napa, is a legitimately exciting inclusion and feels like a deliberate pick rather than a distributor default. The red side is thinner β an Eric Louis Pinot Noir, a Bodegas Lanzaga Tempranillo, and a Prati Cab don't exactly scream ambition β but they're serviceable. What's missing is anything from Southeast Asia-adjacent regions like Austria or Alsace, which would be a natural fit for this cuisine.
Ten options by the glass with pours running $13β$16, which is fair for downtown Raleigh. The spread hits Prosecco, rosΓ©, a couple of whites, and a handful of reds, covering the basics without any real surprises. There's no apparent rotation program here β this looks like a static list that gets refreshed when something runs out, not a thoughtfully curated glass program.
Massican Annia 2023 β $60
At 88% above retail on a $32 bottle, this is the least gouged wine on the list β and it's also the most interesting. Massican's Tocai Friulano blend has the texture and salinity to stand up to anything on the Bida Manda menu. Order this.
Bodegas Lanzaga 'LZ' Tempranillo
Rioja on a Laotian restaurant wine list is an unexpected move, and it works. The LZ is grippy and earthy enough to hold its own against the pork belly soup without overwhelming the herbs and citrus doing the heavy lifting in the broth.
Terra d'Oro Chenin Blanc & Viognier 2023
A 275% markup on a $16 retail bottle is the steepest on the list, and Terra d'Oro isn't worth the scrutiny at any price. There are better aromatic whites here for your money.
Massican Annia 2023 + Lettuce Wraps
The Annia's herbal, saline quality mirrors the fresh herbs and citrus in the wraps without competing with them. It's a high-acid, textured white that refreshes between bites instead of muddying the flavors.
π² The Bottom Line
Bida Manda's wine list punches above its weight for a Laotian restaurant in a mid-size Southern city, with a few genuinely smart picks buried under some steep markups. Come for the food, drink the Massican, and don't overthink the rest.

Azitra is doing something genuinely unusual β running a Wine Spectator-caliber list at an upscale Indian restaurant in Raleigh β and largely pulling it off. The Wednesday half-price program alone makes it worth putting in your rotation; the Bollinger and the Drouhin make it worth telling your friends about.
