Walking into a casual counter-service Mediterranean spot and finding Assyrtiko on the wine list is the kind of thing that makes us do a double-take. Athena isn't trying to be a wine destination โ it's a neighborhood gyro joint with honest food at honest prices โ but someone here clearly cared enough to stock wines that actually belong with this cuisine. That alone earns some respect.
The list is small, clocking in somewhere around 20-40 bottles, but it punches above its weight with a genuine focus on Greek and regional Mediterranean producers. Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko from Santorini is a legitimately serious wine โ volcanic, saline, high-acid โ and it has absolutely no business being on a menu next to a gyro plate, in the best possible way. Boutari Moschofilero rounds out the Greek white contingent with something lighter and floral for guests who want approachable over intense. The Cavino Imiglikos Red covers the red wine crowd without demanding too much of anyone. Italy likely fills in the gaps for the Pinot Grigio and Chianti crowd, keeping the list accessible for guests who've never ventured east of Rome.
The by-the-glass program runs an estimated 6-12 options in the $8-$14 range, which is reasonable for Shreveport and genuinely good value given the Greek selections available. We'd expect the Moschofilero and at least one red to show up on the pour list. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority here โ this feels like a set list that stays put โ but when the wines are this food-friendly, that's forgivable.
Boutari Moschofilero โ $28โ$35
Moschofilero is one of Greece's most underrated whites โ crisp, aromatic, low alcohol, built for mezze and grilled protein. At these price points it's a genuine steal for a wine this food-flexible.
Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko
Most guests at a casual Mediterranean grill are reaching for whatever they know. Sigalas is one of Santorini's benchmark producers and their Assyrtiko โ mineral-driven, citrusy, almost briny โ is a world-class white hiding in plain sight on this list. Order it before someone else figures it out.
Cavino Imiglikos Red
Cavino is a large-volume Greek cooperative label and the Imiglikos is a semi-sweet table wine that leans soft and a little one-dimensional. It's not offensive, but with better options on this same list, there's no reason to default to the easy pour.
Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko + Chicken Shawarma
The bright acidity and mineral backbone in the Sigalas Assyrtiko cuts right through the spiced, fatty shawarma without competing with the seasoning. It's the kind of pairing that feels accidental but is completely logical โ high-acid Greek white with lemony, herb-forward grilled meat is a Mediterranean classic for a reason.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
Athena is a counter-service gyro spot that accidentally assembled one of the more interesting Mediterranean wine lists in Shreveport โ if you know what you're looking at, there's real reward here. Come for the shawarma, stay for the Sigalas.
Line Avenue / South Highlands ยท Shreveport ยท Tex-Mex
Superior Grill is the Wild Card precisely because nobody expects a Tex-Mex place on Line Avenue to stock Cakebread and Merry Edwards alongside a $6 house pour โ but here we are. Tuesday half-price wine at the bar is one of the better deals in Shreveport, full stop.

Bella Fresca is doing more with five bottles than most Shreveport spots do with fifty, but a wine program this thin can't fully carry a chef's table concept. Come for the food, order the Languedoc, and hope they expand the list soon.

Fat Calf Brasserie is punching well above Shreveport's wine expectations โ a legitimately thoughtful list in a city where most restaurants mail it in. Yes, send a friend here for wine, especially if they're ordering steak or mussels.

Bella Fresca is doing something that shouldn't work in Shreveport but quietly does โ a focused, globally curious wine list that leans Oregon and Southern France instead of taking the easy path. It's not perfect, but it's the kind of place you send a friend when they insist they can't find good wine in Louisiana.

Pierremont / Provenance ยท Shreveport ยท Steakhouse / Piano Bar
Superior's is doing real work with its wine program by Shreveport standards โ a serious list, legitimate producers, and a half-price Monday that should be on your weekly calendar. The markup on a regular night stings, but this is the kind of place that earns the splurge when the piano's playing and the steak is right.
