Nineteen bottles. That's the whole list, and somehow it works. Ancora Vino is a bottle shop and wine bar that makes every slot count — no filler, no obvious crowd-pleasing Malbecs, no apology-Pinot-Grigio.
The list reads like a love letter to the Loire, Portugal, and northern Italy, with a few pinch-yourself detours: a Pommard from Maison du Chancelier, a Rosso di Montalcino from Il Poggiolo, and the wildly underplayed Bergmanhoff Vernatsch from Alto Adige. Niepoort shows up twice — both the Vinho Verde Nat Cool and the Bairrada Tinto — which tells you immediately where this shop's head is at. There's real range here despite the small footprint: Alsace, Burgundy, Saumur, Menetou-Salon, Sicily, and Galicia all make the cut. The only gap is the New World, which is barely a whisper beyond the Flâneur Chardonnay and Marchelle Pinot Noir.
By-the-glass specifics weren't available during our visit, but as a bottle shop hybrid, the expectation is that opened bottles rotate through at pour prices. If they're running pours off anything close to the Terres Blondes Gamay or the Caruso e Minini Frappello, that's a serious deal — those are exactly the kinds of wines that convert people who think they don't like wine.
Terres Blondes Touraine Gamay 2025 — $16
Sixteen dollars for a Loire Gamay from a quality-focused producer is almost rude. Light, chillable, and genuinely interesting — this is the bottle you grab on a Tuesday night and wonder why you ever bought grocery store wine.
Bergmanhoff Vernatsch Hoamet 2020
Vernatsch from Alto Adige almost never shows up on any list in the US, let alone in San Jose. It's a pale, earthy red that most people walk right past — which means more for you. At $60 it's the most adventurous thing on the shelf.
Maison du Chancelier Pommard La Croix Planet VV 2021
The Pommard is legitimately exciting to see here, but at $100 it's also the only bottle that strains the otherwise stellar value proposition of this list. Not a ripoff by Burgundy standards, but if budget is on your mind, there are four or five other bottles here that will impress just as hard.
Caruso e Minini Frappato/Nerello Mascalese Frappello 2024 + Tapas charcuterie board
This Sicilian blend is bright, low-tannin, and has just enough acidity to cut through cured meats without competing. It's exactly the kind of wine you want circling a table of shared plates — easy to pour, hard to stop.
The Bottom Line
Ancora Vino is the kind of small, focused bottle shop that makes you realize how much dead weight most wine lists carry. If you're anywhere near San Jose and curious about natural wine, obscure Italian reds, or just want something genuinely weird and good for under $25, this place deserves your attention.

Fogo de Chão San Jose is a meat destination, full stop — the wine list exists as a formality, not a feature. Order the Salton sparkling to start, grab the Malbec for the meat parade, and don't expect anything more than that.

Be.Steak.A is doing more with its wine list than most South Bay steakhouses bother to attempt — the sommelier is real, the selections have personality, and the Massican pick alone earns genuine respect. The markups are on the steeper side, which is expected at this level, but the list has enough character that you're paying for something worth the splurge.

GrandView is doing exactly what a mountaintop steakhouse with jaw-dropping views over Santa Clara Valley is supposed to do — it's feeding the occasion, not the curiosity. Bring someone you want to impress, order the Mt. Brave, and enjoy the sunset.
