Wingman Metrics
Seventy-four labels at a wine bar in San Jose is not what you're expecting, and the list earns a second and third look. The sparkling section alone — Cava, Crémant, pét-nat, Blanc de Noirs, Champagne — signals that someone here is paying attention. This isn't a bar that slapped a wine list together to justify the markup.
The California focus is tight and well-curated: Reeve shows up multiple times across both sparkling and Chardonnay, which tells you the buyer has a point of view, not just a distributor relationship. Rivers Marie and Tyler round out a Chardonnay section that leans cool-climate and restrained — no buttery blockbusters here. The Onward Sparkling Red Pétillant Naturel 2022 at $68 is the kind of left-field pick that separates a real list from a generic one. International whites like the Fernlands Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and the Bodegas Breca Rosé of Garnacha keep things from getting too insular.
Twenty-seven options by the glass is genuinely impressive and means you can do a real tour without committing to a bottle. Pours start at $6 and the Reeve Septime Chardonnay and Rivers Marie Chardonnay both clock in at $13/glass — not cheap, but these are serious producers. The glass program mirrors the bottle list well, which is rarer than it should be.
The Bottom Line
Rootstock is doing something genuinely uncommon for San Jose: building a wine list with a real perspective, fair prices, and enough depth to reward repeat visits. The pét-nat and multi-vintage Reeve presence alone put it ahead of most dedicated wine bars in the Bay. If you care about what's in your glass, this place deserves your attention.
· San Jose · Steakhouse
The Capital Grille San Jose is a reliable but unambitious wine program — it stocks the bottles a Napa-loving business dinner crowd expects and prices them accordingly. If you're looking for discovery or value, you won't find much here; if you need a solid Cab to go with a dry-aged steak and you're on someone else's tab, it does the job.

A Bellagio is doing something right: a 65-bottle Italian-leaning list with 19 glass options, fair pricing, and enough regional Italian depth to make the wine order as interesting as the food order. Staff confidence and dish data are unknowns from where we sit, but the list itself is worth showing up for — especially if you let the Montecucco Sangiovese talk you into a second glass.

Orchard City Kitchen's all-glass wine program is a smart move that forces the list to work harder — and mostly it does. The selection punches above its weight with picks from Talley, August West, Tablas Creek, and J. Lassalle sharing space with genuinely interesting European pours. If you're in San Jose and want to drink something more interesting than the usual Cab-or-Chardonnay binary, this list gives you real options.

Ozumo pulls off something most restaurants don't bother attempting: a tight, curated by-the-glass program that actually reflects a point of view. The Loire and Burgundy presence alongside skin-contact Pinot Gris and volcanic Soave tells you someone made real choices here. If you're eating Japanese and want to drink something more interesting than the house Pinot Noir, this list delivers — especially in that $13–$19 range.

Blossom & Bourbon's wine list is built for the broadest possible audience, and it delivers exactly that — comfortable, recognizable, inoffensive. If you're with a group and someone just wants a glass of Belle Glos Pinot Noir, this works. But there's little here that will surprise you or make you feel like the restaurant is working on your behalf as a wine drinker. Order the Pedroncelli Zinfandel if it's on the table, and temper expectations on value.

Pizza Antica is not trying to be a wine destination, which makes it more surprising that the list holds up this well. Eighteen thoughtful labels, full BTG access, fair pricing, and enough Italian regional depth to keep things interesting — the Viberti Barbera and the Graci Etna Rosato alone justify a closer look. If you're grabbing pizza in San Jose and want to drink something worth talking about, this list has you covered.

Communion is a focused, deliberate wine bar that built a short list with real intention — anchored on Leitz, punctuated by a standout Chave Selections white, and thoughtful enough to include non-alcoholic options alongside the serious stuff. We don't have pricing data to confirm value, and the list is compact enough that adventurous drinkers may want more range — but what's here is chosen with care. If you're in Telluride and want wine that someone actually thought about, this is your stop.

Elsewhere is doing something genuinely useful in St. Helena: giving people a place to drink well after dinner without the pageantry of a tasting room or the markup theater of a hotel bar. We can't confirm every bottle or price point from here, but a sommelier-driven list with Napa, Burgundy, and Bordeaux range plus honest small plates earns a look. Go in, talk to the staff, and let them guide you — that's exactly what this kind of place is built for.

Maison is what happens when someone builds a wine bar list with genuine curiosity instead of a regional checklist — you're in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country and the list keeps pointing you toward Mosel Riesling, Douro whites, and 1934 Madeira. The by-the-glass program alone justifies a visit, and the pricing is fair enough that you can explore without flinching. If you're in Healdsburg and you actually care about wine, this is the stop.
