The wine list at Zola Bistro arrives looking like it was put together by someone who actually drinks wine — not just someone who ordered from a distributor catalog. It's not trying to be a wine bar, but it's not phoning it in either. There's a real sense of curation here, modest in size but pointed in direction.
Forty-to-sixty bottles covering California, the Rhône, Burgundy, Loire, Champagne, the Pacific Northwest, and Argentina is a lot of ground for a neighborhood bistro — and Zola mostly pulls it off. Highlights like the Domaine Seguinot Chablis and Pegau Maclura Côte du Rhône suggest someone with genuine old-world instincts shaped this list. The California presence is solid without being generic — La Follette Chardonnay is a real pick, not a grocery-shelf filler. The Richter Veldenzer Elisenberg Riesling is a pleasant surprise that most Ann Arbor wine lists wouldn't go near.
The by-the-glass program runs an estimated 12–18 options, which is generous for a bistro of this size. Pricing lands in the $10–$16 range per glass, which feels honest given the quality of what's in the pour. We'd like to see more rotation — the list reads like it stays put for a while — but the foundation is strong enough that it doesn't matter much.
Tarima Hill Monastrell — $38
Monastrell from Alicante is chronically underpriced relative to what it delivers — big, dark fruit with real structure — and at the lower end of Zola's bottle range, this is a straight-up win for the table.
Richter Veldenzer Elisenberg Riesling
Most diners will scroll past anything German without a second glance, which is exactly why you shouldn't. Richter makes serious Mosel Riesling and this one is a textbook example of why that region punches above its weight — bright, mineral, and completely at home next to the shakshuka.
Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Brut Champagne
It's a great bottle. It's also a prestige cuvée that every restaurant marks up to the moon. Unless you're celebrating something that genuinely warrants it, the Charles Orban Carte Noir Brut sitting lower on the same list will make you equally happy for a lot less money.
Domaine Seguinot Chablis + Seasonal fish special
Chablis and white fish is not a revelation, but Seguinot makes a lean, saline, unoaked Chablis that cuts through any richness in the preparation and makes the whole plate feel brighter. It's a classic combination that works every single time.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Zola Bistro is the neighborhood restaurant you wish every neighborhood had — a wine list that clears the bar comfortably, priced without greed, and deep enough to reward curious drinkers. We'd send a friend here without hesitation.
Downtown · Ann Arbor · Korean BBQ
Tomukun is a great place to eat Korean BBQ and drink soju with friends — the wine list is just not the reason to come here. Order the Riesling if you must, or do yourself a favor and let the soju do the work.

Downtown · Ann Arbor · Asian noodle bar featuring Korean, Japanese, and other East Asian dishes
Come to Tomukun for the ramen — come for the bibimbap — just don't come for the wine list. Order a beer, or lean into the plum wine and have some fun with it.

Downtown · Ann Arbor · French-Inspired Café / Bistro
Cafe Zola won't be your next wine destination, but it's a dependable neighborhood bistro where you can drink something decent and French without much risk. Stick to the Rhône or the Jadot Chardonnay, avoid the Cloudy Bay markup, and let the crêpes do the heavy lifting.

Downtown · Ann Arbor · North Indian, Tandoori, and Mughlai
Shalimar isn't a wine destination, but it's playing a smarter game than most Indian restaurants in its bracket — fair prices, a Rhône red, and a Michigan Riesling that was practically designed for the menu. Order the Chateau Grand Traverse, get the Tandoori Chicken, and stop being surprised that it works.

Depot Town / Near North Campus · Ann Arbor · American Seafood and Steak
Gandy Dancer delivers exactly what it promises — a handsome, safe, California-anchored wine list that holds up fine against the prime rib and seafood platters without ever exciting you. Send a friend here for the room and the food; just set expectations accordingly on the wine.

West Ann Arbor · Ann Arbor · Italian, Wood-Fired Pizza
Bigalora isn't trying to be a wine destination and doesn't need to be — but its tight, Italy-leaning list with generous by-the-glass coverage earns it a reliable spot in the Ann Arbor rotation. Markups could be friendlier, but the bones are good.
