Wingman Metrics
Walking into a wine-country tavern inside The Lodge at Sonoma and finding Madeira and Austrian dessert wines sharing menu space with Bedrock Syrah and Kistler Chard is not what we expected β and that's a compliment. The list is compact at five labels on the bottle side, but whoever put this together was clearly thinking beyond the standard Sonoma Cab-and-Pinot safety net. There's a point of view here, and it's more interesting than the hotel-restaurant context would suggest.
Five bottle labels sounds thin on paper, but the by-the-glass program is where this list actually lives β and it ranges from Roederer Estate Brut to Kracher Auslese to a 2024 Bedrock Syrah, which is a genuinely eclectic spread. The fortified wine section is the real standout: Warre's LBV Port, Broadbent Verdelho Madeira, and Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny at $11β$17 for 2oz pours is a rare find at a casual tavern anywhere, let alone in a hotel. Local credibility comes via Blue Farm Pinot from Russian River and Far Mountain's 'Fission' Cab off Moon Mountain, which shows they're not just phoning in the Sonoma regionalism. The Bouchard Bourgogne Rouge at $35 a pour feels like a stretch when you can grab a bottle at retail for not much more, but everything else seems priced with at least some restraint.
The glass program punches well above the restaurant's bottle list size, with options spanning Champagne (Lanson PΓ¨re & Fils), California Chardonnay (Kistler Russian River), Pinot, Cab, Syrah, and a full dessert/fortified flight. Sunday's Pizza & Pinot promotion takes the edge off prices that can otherwise climb β $35 a pour for Kistler is fair for what it is, but it adds up fast. Rotation isn't confirmed, but the presence of a 2024 Bedrock Syrah suggests they're keeping things reasonably current.
Bedrock Syrah CA 2024 β $35/5oz
Bedrock is one of California's most respected names for field blends and heritage varieties, and getting a pour of their current Syrah in a wine-country tavern setting β next to a wood-fired pizza β is genuinely good value for the context. Order two.
Broadbent 10 Years Old Verdelho Madeira N/V
Most people at this restaurant will order Pinot or Cab and call it a night. That's their loss. Broadbent's Verdelho Madeira at $17 for a 2oz pour is a nuttier, more acidic, longer-lived experience than anything else on this list β and almost no one at the table next to you will know what it is.
Lanson Père & Fils Champagne NV
At $37 a glass, you're paying a steep premium for a non-vintage entry-level Champagne that sits at the lower end of the grande marque tier. It's fine β it's Champagne β but if you're spending $37 on a single glass of bubbles, the Roederer Estate Brut at a lower price point gives you better QPR right here in Anderson Valley.
Far Mountain 'Fission' Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain 2022 + Wood-fired steak
Moon Mountain Cab is structured, mineral-driven, and built for red meat β the elevation and volcanic soils give it an edge that cuts through the char on a wood-grilled steak better than a rounder, fruit-forward Napa bottling would.
Sunday β Pizza & Pinot Sundays promotion β half-price wine referenced in menu navigation. Confirm current details with the restaurant.
π² The Bottom Line
Wit & Wisdom isn't trying to be a wine bar, but whoever curated this program snuck in enough genuine curiosity β Madeira, Bedrock Syrah, Austrian dessert wine β to make it worth paying attention to. Show up Sunday, order a Pinot with your pizza, and end with the Madeira. You'll be surprised.

Bedrock is not a wine list β it's a focused argument for why old-vine California deserves your full attention. If you're in Sonoma and you skip this, you're doing it wrong.

Bravas is a Wild Card in the best sense: a casual, loud, share-everything tapas bar in the middle of Sonoma Wine Country that actually built a wine list with a brain. It won't blow your mind, but it will keep your glass interesting all night without emptying your wallet.

Chalkboard isn't trying to be a destination wine bar β it's a polished Healdsburg restaurant that takes its wine list seriously enough to stock Rochioli, Copain, and Ridge alongside Taittinger and actually price them like they want you to order a second bottle. Send a friend here and tell them to start with the Sauvignon Blanc.

The Matheson has built one of the most genuinely exciting wine programs in Sonoma wine country β the Wine Wall alone is worth the trip, and the depth of the broader list shows real intention. The markups on trophy bottles are hard to ignore, but if you play the Wall smart, you'll drink far better here than almost anywhere else in Healdsburg.
