First Impression
You're in Indianapolis, and someone handed you a list with Taupenot-Merme Chambolle-Musigny and Vincent Pinard Sancerre on it. That's not an accident β someone here actually cares. The list reads less like a restaurant wine menu and more like a buyer who did their homework and then kept going.
Selection Deep Dive
The range here is genuinely impressive for any city, let alone one not typically mentioned in wine conversations. You've got Loire representation from both the muscular, mineral Muscadet end (Domaine de la GΓ©raudrie) and the refined Sancerre tier (Vincent Pinard's 'Flores'). The Burgundy selections β Alex Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet and Domaine Taupenot-Merme Chambolle-Musigny β show real Old World depth that most restaurants in this price tier wouldn't bother stocking. The New World side doesn't slouch either: Peay's 'Cep' Pinot from Sonoma Coast and Division Wine Making's Willamette Chardonnay signal a buyer with a taste for cool-climate precision over fruit bombs. The one gap is a lack of Spanish or Italian representation, which would round this list out nicely.
By the Glass
We couldn't confirm exact by-the-glass counts from the available data, but the estimated glass pour range of $12β$20 tracks reasonably with the caliber of producers on the list. If they're pouring Lieu Dit Sauvignon Blanc and the Ingrid Groiss Riesling by the glass, that's already better than most spots in town. A more formal by-the-glass program with confirmed pours would push this list into Rager territory.
2022 Lieu Dit Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Ynez Valley, CA β $12
Lieu Dit makes some of the most serious Sauvignon Blanc in California β Loire-style, restrained, minerally β and it rarely shows up at accessible price points. If this is pouring in the $12-$14 glass range, it's the smartest pour on the list.
2021 Ingrid Groiss Riesling 'Auf der Henne', NiederΓΆsterreich, AT
Austrian Riesling from a small, biodynamic producer in the Weinviertel β not a name most diners will recognize, but Groiss makes terroir-driven, precise wine that overdelivers at every price point. Most tables will walk right past it for something they know. Don't.
2019 Snowden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 'Brothers Vineyard', Napa Valley, CA
Snowden is a respectable producer, but Napa Cab is the one category on this list where restaurant markup consistently hurts the drinker most. Unless the price is genuinely fair, the same money spent on the Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Cab will likely buy you more interest and less hype.
2021 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir 'Cep', Sonoma Coast, CA + Chef's Tasting Menu
Peay's 'Cep' is a cool, coastal Pinot with real savory depth β it's got enough structure to move through multiple courses without overwhelming anything. If you're committing to the tasting menu, this is the bottle that can go the distance.
π² The Bottom Line
Vida Norte is doing something quietly ambitious in Indianapolis β a wine list with actual conviction, real producers, and a point of view that extends well beyond crowd-pleasing. Send your wine-curious friends here and let them be surprised.
