From the jump, it's clear they've leaned into their identity: big reds, Italian classics, and a nod to California that doesn't feel forced. For a bustling multi-level pizza-and-pasta spot in Carmel, that kind of editorial discipline earns some respect.
Tuscany anchors the list hard, and that's not a complaint — if you're going to specialize, specialize well. Antinori Tignanello shows up as a centerpiece, which is a legitimate flex for a casual Italian restaurant, and Brunello di Montalcino and Barolo selections from Piedmont give the list real backbone. Veneto gets a seat at the table with Amarone della Valpolicella in the mix, rounding out the Super Tuscan-heavy Italian core. Antinori Tignanello
Look, Tignanello is a great wine — we're not disputing that. But it's also one of the most recognized Super Tuscans on the planet, which means restaurants can price it with confidence that someone will bite. At Vesuvio, you're almost certainly paying a premium for the label recognition alone. If you know Tignanello's retail price and the markup feels right, go for it. If not, your money works harder elsewhere on this list.
Barolo + Wood-fired pizza with cured meats
Barolo's high tannin and bright acidity cut right through the fat of a wood-fired cured meat pizza — the char on the crust plays off the wine's earthy, dried rose character in a way that makes the whole thing feel more intentional than it has any right to at a casual rooftop dinner.
