First Impression
You're perched on the Sonoma Coast with the Pacific doing its thing outside the window, and the wine list actually matches the moment โ tight, California-focused, and anchored by producers who know this coastline as well as the kitchen does. It's not trying to be a San Francisco wine bar, which is exactly the right call. What's here earns its place.
Selection Deep Dive
The list runs 80-120 bottles and stays squarely in California, which makes sense when you're surrounded by some of the state's best cool-climate growing. The heavy hitters are legitimate: Littorai and Flowers representing the Sonoma Coast with real conviction, Williams Selyem and Merry Edwards flying the flag for Russian River Pinot, and Ridge anchoring the conversation for anyone who wants structure and age-worthiness. The inclusion of Kendall-Jackson and Jordan feels like a nod to lodge guests who want a familiar name โ a minor compromise but not a dealbreaker. Gaps show up around anything outside California, but that's a deliberate curatorial choice, not laziness.
By the Glass
Twelve to eighteen pours by the glass is a solid spread for a remote lodge dining room, and the $12โ$18 range is honest for this caliber of producer. We'd want to see a little more rotation to keep regulars on their toes, but when you're pulling from the same producers as the bottle list, the glass program punches well above the setting.
Jordan Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon โ $60โ$80 est.
Jordan is one of California's most consistent and fairly priced bottles at the restaurant level. Here, against the backdrop of this coastline setting, it drinks like a treat without the ego-driven markup you'd see in a city steakhouse.
Littorai Wines Pinot Noir
Most guests at a lodge like this are reaching for something familiar. Littorai is one of the most serious Sonoma Coast producers alive, and if it's on the list at a reasonable lodge price, you'd be crazy to walk past it for something safer.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay
We get why it's here โ broad appeal, recognizable label โ but you're in Sea Ranch with Flowers and Littorai available. Paying restaurant markup for a grocery store Chardonnay when the coastal stuff is right there on the same list is a miss.
Merry Edwards Winery Pinot Noir + Pacific Salmon
Merry Edwards' Russian River Pinot has the acid and red-fruit precision to cut through the richness of Pacific salmon without steamrolling it. It's a classic Sonoma Coast move, and on this menu, with this setting, it's the obvious play.
๐ฒ The Bottom Line
The Sea Ranch Lodge earns its Wine Spectator nod by keeping things smart and local rather than trying to impress with volume. If you're making the drive up the coast, this wine list is a legitimate reason to stay for dinner.
