Fifty-five labels at a hotel wine lounge in Paso Robles sounds like it could go sideways fast — but The Piper opens with a list that's genuinely rooted in the region. Lone Madrone and Tablas Creek show up early, and that tells you someone here is paying attention to what's actually growing nearby.
The white lineup is the real story: Tangent Albariño, Niner Albariño, Broken Earth Grenache Blanc, Lone Madrone Riesling, and Denner Theresa give you a proper tour of Paso's more interesting white varieties beyond the usual Chardonnay wall. There's a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2021 at $120 for those who want to go full Judgment of Paris nostalgia, and a Treana Blanc at $51 that bridges the local-meets-classic gap well. The sparkling section swings from a $25 Lone Madrone Pétillant Naturel to a $140 Canard-Duchêne Cuvée V Brut Nature 2012 — an odd but interesting range for a hotel lounge. What we'd love to see more of is reds depth; the extracted data skews white-heavy, which feels like a missed opportunity in Cabernet country.
Sixteen pours is a solid by-the-glass count, spanning $10 to $19. Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas at $15/glass is the standout — that's a legitimately interesting Rhône-style white from one of Paso's most respected producers in a format that makes it accessible. The $10 Steakhouse Chardonnay is the budget floor, and it's exactly what it sounds like.

The Piper Wine Lounge punches above its hotel-bar weight class by leaning hard into local producers and offering some genuinely adventurous whites by the glass. Markup is fair across the board, and $15 for Tablas Creek is the kind of detail that earns goodwill fast. If you're staying at Paso Robles Inn or just wandering through town, this is worth a stop — especially if you let the Albariños and Grenache Blancs do the talking.
