Wingman Metrics
Walking into The English Inn feels like stepping into a Tudor manor that somehow ended up in mid-Michigan — all dark wood, candlelight, and occasion-dinner energy. The wine list matches that vibe: composed, respectable, and not trying to surprise anyone. It's the kind of list that wants you to feel comfortable, not challenged.
The 80-120 bottle list leans heavily on Napa and Sonoma with nods to Burgundy, Bordeaux, and the Pacific Northwest — a solid if predictable roadmap for a continental fine dining room. You'll find recognizable names like Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley and Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling from Columbia Valley anchoring the Pacific Northwest section. Burgundy and Bordeaux make an appearance but don't expect deep producer rabbit holes — this is curated for the anniversary crowd, not the obsessives. The gaps are in natural wine, skin-contact stuff, or anything south of France — but that's not really the point here.
Ten to sixteen pours gives the by-the-glass program a reasonable runway, covering the expected white-red-bubbles bases with bottles like Meiomi Pinot Noir and Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay doing the heavy lifting for the crowd-pleaser lane. At $12-$18 a glass, you're not getting a steal, but you're not getting gouged either — it's priced exactly like the dining room looks. Rotation appears minimal; this is a set-and-forget program, not one that chases seasons.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling Columbia Valley — $45
Columbia Valley Riesling is criminally underrated at the dinner table, and Chateau Ste. Michelle's version delivers real fruit precision and bright acidity at a price that won't punch a hole in the evening. It's the move if you're ordering seafood or want something that won't fight the kitchen.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley
Jordan gets dismissed as 'safe Cab' by people who haven't had it in the right setting — and a candlelit room with a rack of lamb is exactly the right setting. It's consistently well-made, approachable without being flabby, and tends to be underordered because people assume the price means it's a consolation pick. It isn't.
Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne
Veuve Clicquot is great Champagne, full stop — but it's one of the most marked-up bottles in any fine dining wine program in America. You're paying a significant premium for name recognition, and at The English Inn's price tier, that gap stings. If you want bubbles, ask if there's a grower Champagne hiding anywhere, or just skip it.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley + Rack of Lamb
Jordan's Cab has enough structure to stand up to lamb's richness without overwhelming the herbs and char. Alexander Valley fruit keeps it from going too tannic, which means you're getting complement, not competition, on every bite.
✔️ The Bottom Line
The English Inn is a reliable wine destination for a special occasion in mid-Michigan — not a destination for wine geeks, but a genuinely competent list with a sommelier on staff who can steer you right. Send your parents here for their anniversary; you'll have a good bottle, and no one will stress about it.

El Azteco is a beloved college-town institution, and the wine list knows its place — it's there so you can technically order wine, not because anyone thought hard about it. Stick to the margaritas; they're the real program here.

Beggar's Banquet is a beloved East Lansing institution and the wine list reflects that — it's comfortable, familiar, and a little overpriced. Come on a Wednesday when half-price bottles make the steep markups survivable, order the bubbles, and remember that the beer list is probably the real reason everyone keeps coming back.

Zoobie's isn't where you go to geek out on wine, but if you're meeting friends for dinner in Old Town and someone at the table insists on a glass, you won't be stuck with regret. Grab the Malbec or the Mawby rosé, let everyone else argue about the beer list.
