350 Labels of California Comfort Food

Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Capital Grille is thick — over 350 labels thick — but don't mistake volume for adventure. This is a steakhouse wine list in the corporate sense: heavy on California, heavier on recognizable names, and priced like they know you're expensing it.
California dominates the list with the usual suspects: Rombauer Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, J Pinot Noir, Orin Swift Merlot, and J. Lohr's reserve tier wines. These are crowd-pleasers, not conversation starters. The list is built for people who want to recognize the label and feel safe about their choice. We didn't spot much Old World depth or natural wine exploration — this is Napa and Sonoma doing what they do best, which is comforting but predictable. The focus on big-name producers means you're paying for brand recognition as much as what's in the bottle.
The glass pour program exists but details are thin. Capital Grille runs wine tasting events like their 'Generous Pour' series, which suggests they rotate offerings and take their BTG program seriously enough to host events around it. Expect the glass list to mirror the bottle list: safe California picks that pair with dry-aged beef without raising eyebrows.
J. Lohr Reserve Wines — Unknown
J. Lohr's reserve tier offers solid quality without the Napa Valley tax, and they're hosting wine dinners here which means staff knows the portfolio
Palmera Bench Cabernet Sauvignon
Less recognizable than Rombauer or Orin Swift, but a small-production Napa Cab that likely offers better value than the marquee names
Rombauer Carneros Chardonnay
It's everywhere and it's marked up everywhere — you're paying steakhouse pricing for a wine you can find at Costco
Orin Swift Merlot + Dry-Aged Steak
Orin Swift's fruit-forward, structured Merlot has the tannins and weight to stand up to a heavily marbled dry-aged cut without overwhelming it
✔️ The Bottom Line
Capital Grille delivers what corporate steakhouses do: a safe, California-heavy list with proper service and glassware. You won't discover anything exciting, but you won't get burned either. It's the wine equivalent of ordering the filet — predictable, reliable, and marked up accordingly.

Sammie's is a genuinely fun room with a wine list that's earned its Wine Spectator hardware — the Italian depth is real, the sommelier knows her stuff, and Monday half-price bottles might be the best deal in Austin. Just go in knowing the markups lean steep, and let Jenny point you toward the plays that aren't on the tourist track.

Birdie's has no business being this good at wine for a neighborhood spot on East 12th — and that's the highest compliment we can give it. Send your friends here, tell them to order Burgundy, and let them figure out on their own that this place is a wild card worth knowing.

Siena's wine list is a genuine Italian-focused program with some serious names and a half-price Monday that should be on every Austin wine drinker's calendar. Markups run steep at the high end, but the bones are good enough that we'd send a friend — especially on a Monday.

Cattleman's Exchange isn't a wine destination, but it's not a disaster either — it's a hotel steakhouse doing hotel steakhouse things. If you're in Abilene and need a Cab with your beef, you'll find something that works; just don't expect the list to surprise you.

LongHorn Springfield isn't a wine destination — but with markups this low and pours this affordable, it's one of the better casual chain options in Illinois for a simple red with a big steak. Send a friend here for dinner; just don't tell them to geek out over the list.

Saltgrass Round Rock is exactly what it looks like: a chain steakhouse wine list on autopilot, built around brand names, sweet crowd-pleasers, and markups that assume you're not paying attention. Order a beer or a cocktail and save the wine for somewhere that actually cares.
