The list at Stella Van Buren arrives looking the part — 80 bottles, Italian and Californian anchors, a few French names sprinkled in for credibility. It fits the room: dark, romantic, the kind of place where someone's definitely about to propose. What you're getting is a competent, crowd-pleasing list that doesn't push you anywhere uncomfortable.
The bones are good. Italy shows up properly with Vietti Barbera d'Asti from Piedmont, the Argiano Toscana blend, and a Domaine Vocoret Chablis that earns its place among the Chardonnay options. California takes up a lot of real estate — Kokomo Cab from Sonoma, Hartford Court from Russian River, and yes, The Prisoner, which at this point is practically required by law at any upscale American restaurant. Oregon gets a nod via Lingua Franca's 'Avni' Pinot Noir, which is the most interesting name on the list and reflects someone actually paying attention. The gaps are in the South and Burgundy depth — if you're hunting for Côte de Nuits or anything below the Loire, you're out of luck.
Eighteen by-the-glass options at $15–$24 is a respectable program for Milwaukee fine dining. The range covers Prosecco, Champagne, and both Old and New World reds and whites, which means you can build a full meal without committing to a bottle. Rotation details are unclear, but the presence of both Piper-Heidsieck and Alfred Gratien by the glass suggests someone cares at least a little.
Vietti 'Tre Vigne' Barbera d'Asti, Piedmont, IT — $52
Vietti is a serious Piedmontese producer and Barbera d'Asti at this price point is genuinely fair. You're getting bright acidity, dark fruit, and a wine that punches above its bottle price. In a list that otherwise skews steep, this one earns its spot.
Lingua Franca 'Avni' Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, OR
Most tables here are going straight to Cab or The Prisoner without looking up. Lingua Franca is Larry Stone's project and 'Avni' is a legitimately elegant Oregon Pinot that most diners at a steakhouse will walk right past. Their loss.
Prisoner Wine Co. 'The Prisoner' Proprietary Blend, California
Look, it's fine — but The Prisoner is on every list in America at a markup that reflects the brand name more than what's in the glass. At a steakhouse charging fine-dining prices, you can do better for the same money elsewhere on this list.
Argiano 'NC Confunditur' Proprietary Blend, Toscana IGT, IT + Prime Steak
A Super Tuscan-style blend has the structure and dark fruit to stand up to a well-marbled prime cut without the price ceiling of a Barolo. It's the Italian steakhouse pairing done right — no translation required.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Stella Van Buren is a reliable wine list in a beautiful room — you won't be embarrassed by anything you order, but you'll pay for the ambiance as much as the wine. Send your friend here for a special occasion, not a deep-dive wine night.
Downtown · Milwaukee · Brazilian Steakhouse
Rodizio Grill Milwaukee is a genuinely fun night out if you're there for the meat and the spectacle — but the wine list is coasting on the restaurant's momentum rather than adding anything to it. Order the Gaucho Club, enjoy the picanha, and save your serious wine budget for somewhere else.

Screaming Tuna isn't a wine destination, but it's a sushi spot with a wine list that actually respects the food it's serving — and in Milwaukee, that's worth calling out. Take a chance on the Alsatian whites or the sake program and you'll leave happy.

Lupi & Iris is doing something genuinely rare in Milwaukee — a wine program with depth, a sommelier who runs real events, and markup that doesn't make you feel like a mark. Send your friends here, and tell them to book early for the DRC dinner.

Downtown · Milwaukee · Seafood-focused Contemporary American
Third Coast Provisions has a genuinely thoughtful wine list for a city that doesn't always demand one — the Burgundy focus is earned, the staff knows what they're doing, and the seafood menu gives those whites every opportunity to shine. The markup keeps it from being a destination for wine alone, but if you're already here for the food, you're in good hands.

Ca'Lucchenzo is the kind of place that makes you wonder why every Italian restaurant doesn't just commit to Italy this hard on the wine side. It's not a deep cellar, but it's a focused, honest list that actually fits the food — send your friends here and tell them to skip the cocktail.
