The wine list at Sophia's arrives with more confidence than most restaurants in Columbia dare to show — 100+ bottles, a separate reserve list, and a price ceiling that touches Opus One territory. It's a lot to take in, and for mid-Missouri, it genuinely impresses. Whether that ambition translates to value is a different conversation.
The list covers real ground: you've got Willamette Valley Pinot from Beaux Frères, Brunello from Cassanova di Neri, Silver Oak in multiple appellations, and a reserve section anchored by Joseph Phelps Insignia and multiple Opus One vintages. The California Cabernet focus is heavy, which makes sense for the crowd, but European representation beyond the Brunello and a few token Italian whites is thin. That said, finding a 2010 Cassanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino on a list in Columbia, Missouri is genuinely unexpected, and we respect the reach.
Twenty-seven by-the-glass options is an unusually strong count for a restaurant at this price point, and the $5–$11 range keeps things accessible. The pours lean predictable — Meiomi, La Crema, Kim Crawford — but the sheer volume means most tables will find something workable without committing to a bottle.
Saracco Moscato d'Asti DOCG — $27
At 80% above retail, it's the least punishing markup on the list. Light, low-alcohol, and genuinely food-friendly with the dessert menu or a spicy appetizer — and it won't put you in a bad mood when the check arrives.
Beaux Frères Pinot Noir 2013 Willamette Valley
Most tables ordering Pinot here are reaching for Meiomi. Don't. Beaux Frères is Robert Parker's brother-in-law's estate and one of Oregon's benchmark producers — this is a serious bottle that most diners will scroll right past on the way to the Cabernet section.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough
You can buy this at any grocery store in America for $13. A 169% markup on a wine this ubiquitous is a polite robbery. Order something from the reserve list or grab a glass of literally anything else.
Cassanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 2010 DOCG + Steak entrée
Brunello at ten-plus years of age has the structure and dried-cherry depth to stand up to a proper cut of beef without bullying it. It's the most food-serious bottle on the list and deserves a plate that can match it.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Sophia's is doing more with wine than almost anywhere else in Columbia, and we'd happily send a friend here — with a warning to navigate carefully around the commodity wines and go straight for the reserve list. The ambition is real; the markup discipline just hasn't caught up yet.

Günter Hans is a fantastic spot for beer, waffles, and atmosphere — the wine list is an afterthought wearing a Canyon Road uniform. Order a craft beer, enjoy every minute of the pretzel, and come back when they decide wine deserves the same love as everything else on the menu.

Campus Bar & Grill is a great place to watch a Mizzou game and drink a beer — and that's exactly what you should do. The wine program is an afterthought from a restaurant that has no interest in wine, and we respect the honesty of that even as we wave you toward the tap list.

Bleu is the kind of wine list that works well if you already know what you want and want it done properly. It's not pushing any boundaries, the markups are on the steeper side, and there's no real discovery to be had — but for a night out in Columbia, it's a solid, well-stocked option that won't let you down.

Chris McD's is doing more with wine than almost any restaurant in Columbia — 35 by-the-glass pours and some genuinely interesting cellar selections earn it real credibility. Markups run steep and the list leans heavily on California safe bets, but as a neighborhood wine bar that also happens to serve a good steak, it punches above its weight class.
