Wingman Metrics
Walking into a wine bar in Vail, you brace yourself for a wall of Napa Cabs and a $22 Whispering Angel. Root & Flower flips that script immediately — the list is short, deliberately so, and every pour has a point. This is not the resort trap you feared.
Twelve glasses, zero filler. The list spans Muscadet from Pépière, orange wine from Slovenia, Gamay-Mondeuse blends from Vin de France, and a Crémant de Bourgogne that earns its place next to anything in the Champagne section of a much fancier restaurant. There's a clear editorial hand at work here — France and the Pacific Northwest anchor the list, with Austria and Slovenia adding the kind of texture that reminds you someone actually thought about this. The gaps are real: no bottles to speak of on the standard menu, and the 'Rare and Iconic Wine' section is tantalizing but opaque.
The entire program is by the glass, which is either the whole point or a mild frustration depending on how you drink. At $12–$20 a pour, the range covers sparkling, orange, rosé, white, and red without doubling up on anything lazy. Rotation isn't confirmed, but the curation suggests someone is paying attention.
2024 Pépière 'Les Gras Moutons' Muscadet — $17
Pépière is one of the best Muscadet producers alive, and 'Les Gras Moutons' is a serious expression of the appellation — minerally, taut, built for food. Seventeen dollars for this in a ski resort is genuinely a good deal.
2022 Bonnet Cotton 'Yguele' Vin de France Gamay/Mondeuse
Most people will scroll right past this and order the Pinot Noir. Don't. A Gamay-Mondeuse blend from a small Vin de France producer is the kind of weird-good that you talk about later. It's the most interesting red on the list and probably the least ordered.
2023 Minuty 'Prestige' Côtes de Provence Rosé
Minuty Prestige is perfectly fine rosé, but it's also everywhere — every wine shop, every hotel bar, every resort patio in America. At $16 it's not a rip-off, but with an orange wine from Slovenia and a Filipa Pato sparkling rosé on the same list, ordering the Minuty is a missed opportunity.
2022 Owen Roe 'Rosa Mystica' Yakima Valley Cabernet Franc + Charcuterie and artisanal cheese board
Cab Franc's herbal edge and medium weight cut through cured meat fat without overwhelming more delicate cheeses. Owen Roe's Yakima Valley expression has enough structure to hold up to a board but won't bulldoze the room — exactly what you want when you're grazing.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Root & Flower is the rare alpine wine bar where the list reflects genuine taste rather than tourist-facing convenience. If you're in Vail and actually care about what's in your glass, this is your first stop.

Elway's Vail is a reliable steakhouse wine list doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep resort guests happy with names they recognize at prices that sting but don't shock. If you're after exploration, skip it — but if you want a solid California Cab with your prime ribeye after a day on the mountain, it gets the job done.

Alpenrose is a Wild Card in the best sense: a small, themed list that actually commits to its bit, with a few genuinely rare pours you won't find anywhere else in Vail. Markups are steep and the program could use more energy, but if you're eating schnitzel and drinking Austrian Zweigelt in a Bavarian chalet at 8,150 feet, that's not nothing.

Golden Eagle Inn is the kind of reliable mountain wine list that won't embarrass you on a date or a client dinner, but it'll charge you for the altitude at every turn. The Brunello and the Bouchard Beaune are genuine bright spots — find those, skip the Veuve, and you'll have a good night.
