Walking into a winery tasting room with 19 labels, all from one house, could feel limiting — but Phelps Creek makes the single-producer format work. The list reads like a masterclass in what Hood River terroir can do, with enough variety across styles and vineyard blocks to keep things interesting. This isn't a restaurant wine list; it's a focused argument for why the Columbia Gorge deserves your attention.
Phelps Creek leans hard into Pinot Noir — and they should, because they've got range within it. You're looking at single-block expressions like the Beehive, Upper East Slope, and Homestead alongside broader blends and a Reserve tier that includes the Cuvée Alexandrine. Outside Pinot, the list covers Chardonnay in at least three expressions (Lynette, Friends of the Gorge, and the CG bottling), two Pinot Gris options including an Estate Reserve, three Riesling entries spanning Pioneer Vineyards and Underwood Mountain, a rosé, a blanc de noir called Corduroy, and a white blend under the Passetoutgorge label. The gaps are obvious — no Syrah, no red blends, nothing outside the winery's wheelhouse — but within that wheelhouse, the depth is real.
As a tasting room, the by-the-glass structure is almost certainly a tasting flight rather than individual pours, though no pricing or specific flight configurations were confirmed in our research. If you're visiting, expect to work through a curated selection of their current releases rather than ordering single glasses à la carte. Worth asking about what's open that day.
The Bottom Line
Phelps Creek is a single-producer tasting room with serious range inside its self-imposed borders — especially if Pinot Noir in its many expressions is your thing. We can't speak to pricing or food without more data, but the depth of the vineyard-block lineup alone makes this worth the stop if you're driving through Hood River. Analemma earns its Wild Card badge by doing something most Oregon producers won't: planting Mencía and Grenache in the Gorge and committing to it fully. The list is short, but every bottle has a reason to exist. Marchesi Vineyards is doing something genuinely unusual in Oregon wine country — growing Italian grapes with seriousness and selling the results at prices that feel almost charitable. The Barbera lineup alone is worth the detour to Hood River, and the top of the list caps at $45. If you're driving through the Gorge and want to drink something you won't find anywhere else, stop here.

pFriem is one of the best brewpubs in the Pacific Northwest, and the wine list knows its role — it's backup, not the headliner. If you're the wine person in a group of beer people, you'll survive and probably drink something decent from the region. If wine is your whole reason for going out, Hood River has better options for that and pFriem has better options for you — namely, the beer.

Solstice Wood Fire Pizza has no business having a wine list this thoughtful — and that's a compliment. The Pacific Northwest producer focus is genuine, the glass-pour options are generous, and the pricing is fair across the board. If you're passing through Hood River and want to drink something more interesting than house red with your pizza, this is the move.

Double Mountain is a legitimately great brewery with serious pizza — the New Haven-style pies alone are worth the trip to Hood River. But the wine program doesn't earn a second thought, and in a region this wine-rich, that's a real shame. Order a pint, eat the Truffle Shuffle, and save your wine curiosity for one of the Gorge's actual tasting rooms down the road.

Key West Winery is a Wild Card because the concept itself is the draw — tropical fruit wines in the Florida Keys is exactly as niche and fun as it sounds, and it earns its badge on novelty alone. We wouldn't send a serious wine drinker here as a primary destination, but if you're already in Old Town and curious about what local winemaking looks like when grapes aren't the star, it's worth a tasting flight. Go in with the right expectations and you'll leave entertained; go in looking for a Côte de Nuits and you'll leave confused.

If you're passing through Truckee and want something more interesting than a resort bar pour, this is your move — just come in ready to drink their stuff on their terms.
