Napa-Heavy Hits for the East Side

Wingman Metrics
The list at Olives reads like a greatest hits compilation from a wine shop in Yountville — Rombauer, Far Niente, Stag's Leap, Quintessa. It's confident, polished, and clearly curated for a crowd that knows what it likes. The problem is it rarely surprises you.
Fifty-seven labels sounds like a real list, and to be fair, the California section has genuine depth — two Stag's Leap expressions, Frank Family's Winston Hill blend, and Quintessa showing up on a Grand Rapids menu is no small thing. France and Italy get token representation, and there's nods to New Zealand and Spain, but don't come here hunting for a grower Champagne or a funky Sicilian red. The list is built to reassure, not to challenge, and it succeeds on those terms. If you're a Napa loyalist dining on a grilled ribeye, this list was made for you.
Twenty-one by-the-glass options is genuinely generous for a neighborhood New American — most restaurants half that size cap out at twelve. The range spans $8 to $14, which keeps the entry point accessible even if the ceiling isn't breaking any ceilings. Rotation appears limited; this reads like a static program rather than one chasing seasonal pours.
Whispering Angel Rosé, Provence — $55
At $55 for a bottle of Whispering Angel, you're paying a fair premium over retail but not getting gouged — this is one of the more reasonably marked-up bottles on a list that otherwise leans aggressive. It's a reliable, crowd-pleasing pour that works across the whole table.
Frank Family 'Winston Hill' 2015 Blend, Napa Valley
Most tables here are going to reflexively order the Stag's Leap Artemis or the Far Niente. Winston Hill is the move for anyone who wants to drink something with actual age and complexity — a 2015 Napa blend on a restaurant list in Michigan is genuinely worth the attention.
Rombauer Chardonnay, Carneros
At $80 a bottle, you're paying a steep premium for a wine that's ubiquitous, heavily oaked, and frankly more at home at a grocery store wine section than a list trying to take itself seriously. Rombauer has a devoted fanbase, but there are better ways to spend $80 here.
Quintessa Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, Rutherford-Napa Valley + Grilled steak
Quintessa is a structured, serious Napa red with the tannic backbone to stand up to a well-charred steak. It's the kind of bottle that turns a dinner into a meal you actually remember — and at a restaurant built around grilled proteins, this is the pairing the kitchen deserves.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Olives plays it safe and plays it well — this is a polished, Napa-forward list that will satisfy most of the room without ever rattling the table. Just know you're paying for comfort, and budget accordingly.
Downtown / Amway Grand Plaza · Grand Rapids · Spanish / Modern European
MDRD is a Wild Card because it earns its badge the hard way: a hotel rooftop in the Midwest has no business carrying Bodega Chacra or a thoughtful local Michigan Pinot, and yet here we are. Markups keep it from being a destination wine list, but if you're already up there for the views and the paella, there are worse ways to spend your glass pours.

Downtown · Grand Rapids · New American / Teaching Restaurant
A teaching restaurant that could embarrass a few actual restaurants on the wine front — fair prices, genuine producers, and a France-meets-Michigan list that has more intention behind it than most spots charging twice as much. Go in without expectations and leave genuinely impressed.

The Melting Pot's wine list is the dining equivalent of a reliable sedan — it gets you where you're going without any surprises, good or bad. Send a friend here for the experience, not the wine, but reassure them they won't be embarrassed by what's in the glass.

Kentwood / Southeast · Grand Rapids · Upscale Casual American
Cooper's Hawk Kentwood is exactly what it is — a well-run chain winery restaurant with fair prices, a crowd-pleasing list, and staff that's enthusiastic if not deeply expert. Don't come here expecting to find your new favorite grower Champagne; do come here knowing you'll drink something decent without getting gouged.

Midtown · Grand Rapids · Gastro Pub / Contemporary American Comfort Food
The Friesian is a neighborhood pub that happens to have wine — and there's nothing wrong with that. Come on a Wednesday when glasses are half price, order the Tempranillo or the Malbec, and stop overthinking it.

Downtown · Grand Rapids · Casual Italian-American, Sports Bar
Uccello's Downtown is a perfectly solid place to watch a game and eat a pizza — just don't show up expecting the wine list to match the ambition of the kitchen. Order the Nero d'Avola, grab it during happy hour if you can, and save your serious wine drinking for somewhere else.

Mission Farms · Overland Park · New American
Tavern at Mission Farms is a reliable neighborhood wine list — nothing that'll move you, but Wednesday half-price bottles flip the math entirely and make this worth a weekly habit. Come for the deal, not the depth.

Seven Lamps isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — it's a solid neighborhood-caliber list with fair prices, full BTG access, and a couple of genuinely good picks hiding in plain sight. Send a friend here for dinner and tell them to skip the Mouton Cadet and go straight for the Barbera.

Liberty Tavern is a genuinely fun Clarendon spot — just don't let the wine list be the reason you're there. Order a cocktail or commit to the Beaujolais and move on.
