Wingman Metrics
Walking into Michael David's tasting room, the branding hits first β Freakshow, Earthquake, 7 Deadly Zins β these aren't subtle names. But behind the circus-tent marketing is a winery that's genuinely serious about Lodi, and the tasting room reflects that with a lively, no-pretense energy that's hard not to like.
The list is tight and entirely estate-focused, which is either a feature or a bug depending on what you came for. If you're here for Lodi exploration, you're in the right place β Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, and Petite Sirah blends all show up, which is more regional range than most tasting rooms bother with. The Inkblot Cabernet Franc and Inkblot Tannat are the most interesting bottles on the menu, representing a more serious side of the operation that the Freakshow label tends to overshadow. Don't expect to find anything outside the Michael David portfolio β this is a house list, start to finish.
Flights and individual pours cover 8β12 options on any given visit, which is generous for a winery tasting room. The lineup rotates across their full range, so you can get from the easy-drinking Misfits & Mavens Sauvignon Blanc all the way up to the Earthquake Zinfandel in one sitting. No half-glass awkwardness here β this is built for tasting, and the format works.
Freakshow 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon β $20
Twenty dollars at the source for a Cab that retails nationally β you're not paying a restaurant markup here, you're paying what it costs to make it. That's the whole point of coming to the winery.
Michael David Inkblot Tannat
Tannat is one of the most underplanted grapes in California and most people walk right past it. Lodi's heat actually suits it β you get the grip without the brutality. Worth a pour even if you've never heard of the variety.
Earthquake 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon
At $26 it's still not expensive by any stretch, but the Earthquake Cab is the most widely distributed bottle in the lineup β you've probably seen it at Costco. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not why you drove out to Lodi.
Michael David Petite Petit + Charcuterie board from the tasting room
Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot together make for a dark, dense pour that cuts through cured meats and aged cheese without apology. It's a crowd-pleaser that earns it.
π² The Bottom Line
If you're in Lodi and haven't done the Michael David tasting room, you're leaving a gap in your California wine map. The prices are absurdly fair at the source, the Inkblot lineup rewards the curious, and the energy makes it easy to stay longer than you planned.

Market Tavern isn't a wine destination, but it earns its place as the kind of reliable neighborhood spot where you won't feel bad about ordering a second glass. If you're in Lodi and skipping the local bottles, you're doing it wrong.

Zin Bistro is the rare restaurant that actually belongs in its wine region β it champions Lodi producers with conviction and gives old-vine Zinfandel the platform it deserves. If you've been sleeping on Lodi as a wine destination, dinner here is a fast education.

Guantonio's is doing something genuinely rare: running a focused, producer-specific, locally-rooted wine program inside a casual pizza restaurant, and doing it at prices that don't punish you for being curious. If you're eating in Lodi, this is where you drink.

LVVR is a genuine Wild Card β a serious sparkling program planted in the last place most California wine drinkers would look for one. If you're road-tripping through Lodi or just tired of paying Napa prices for bubbles, this is exactly the kind of discovery that makes regional wine exploration worth it.

Onus isn't trying to be a destination wine list β it's a focused estate pour in a shared Lodi tasting room, and at $10β$20 for a flight, the price of admission is low enough that curiosity alone justifies the stop. If you're passing through Lodi and want to understand why the region is having a moment, this is a fine place to start.

Van Ruiten is the kind of unpretentious, estate-focused tasting room that makes a strong argument for Lodi as a serious wine region rather than a bulk-production afterthought. Bottle prices that top out around $45 and flights starting at $15 make it one of the better-value wine experiences in the Central Valley β send your friends, and tell them to go on a Sunday for the live music.

This is the kind of single-estate tasting room that makes Lodi worth the detour β focused, honest, and priced like they'd rather you come back than gouge you once. If you're still writing off Lodi as bulk wine country, Harney Lane is the correction.
