Mesa Mezcal opens strong — a stylish room inside the Westin Irving, a mezcal list that clearly has someone's full attention, and a menu that makes you want to order everything tableside. Then the wine list lands in your hands and the energy evaporates fast.
The wine program here reads like someone handed a hotel F&B manager a wholesale catalog and said 'pick ten.' The bottle list skews heavily California, but not the California you want — we're talking Line 39, Meiomi, and Erath, brands that live at the end-cap of every grocery store in America. There's a Duckhorn Family Wines pairing dinner on the events calendar, which suggests someone upstairs has aspirations, but the everyday list doesn't reflect that ambition. No meaningful regional diversity, no Mexican wines, no natural pours — nothing that matches the restaurant's modern Mexican identity.
We couldn't confirm specific by-the-glass options from available sources, which is itself a sign — a restaurant proud of its glass program makes sure that information is easy to find. Based on the bottle list, expect the same grocery-tier names poured by the glass at proportionally punishing markups.
Meiomi Pinot Noir — $58
We're using 'best value' loosely here. At $58 for a bottle that retails around $20, it's the least offensive markup on a list full of bad options. That's a low bar, and it clears it by inches.
Duckhorn Family Wines (pairing dinner selection)
If Mesa Mezcal is running a wine pairing dinner with Duckhorn — which has solid Napa Cabernet and Migration Pinot Noir in its portfolio — that event is genuinely worth attending. It's the only context at this restaurant where the wine program seems to show up.
Line 39 Pinot Noir
A $10 retail bottle priced at $58 is a 480% markup. That's not a wine list entry, that's a penalty. Line 39 is perfectly drinkable at home for a Tuesday night. Paying $58 for it at a restaurant is a choice you will remember the wrong way.
Argento Estate Organic Malbec + Short Rib Enchiladas
The short rib enchiladas are rich and braised-meat heavy, and a Malbec — even a grocery-tier one — has enough dark fruit and structure to hold up to that. It's not an inspired pairing so much as a functional one, which is about all this wine list can offer.
The Bottom Line
Come for the mezcal and the tableside guacamole — Mesa Mezcal genuinely earns its name on the spirits side. But the wine list is an afterthought priced like a priority, and there's no reason to pay hotel markup on mass-market bottles when a margarita will serve you better.
