Wingman Metrics
Walking into a winery-restaurant in Chesapeake, Virginia, you brace yourself for an all-house-wine situation with nowhere to hide. But Mermaid's list opens up to 66 labels and 53 by-the-glass options — a number that genuinely stops you mid-scroll. This isn't a vanity list; there's real range here, and the pricing doesn't immediately make you want to leave.
The house Mermaid Winery lineup anchors the list — Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Siren's White all come in at $25–$40 a bottle, which is a reasonable ask for an urban winery's own production. Beyond that, they've built out a thoughtful by-the-glass program that pulls from New Zealand (Lake Chalice Skye Sauvignon Blanc, Wither Hills), the Loire (Vinum Cellars Chenin Blanc), Alsace (Villa Wolf Gewurztraminer), and the Rhône-adjacent (Domaine Lafage Novellum Chardonnay), which is a more interesting geography lesson than you'd expect from this zip code. The sparkling section has three separate Proseccos and an L. Mawby Brut Rosé from Michigan, which is a wild and correct choice. Red depth is harder to assess from what's visible, but the white and sparkling bench is genuinely strong.
Fifty-three by-the-glass options is a headline number, and unlike most lists that pad that count with duplicates and whatever's open, Mermaid's glass program actually delivers variety — Old World whites, New World whites, sparkling, and rosé all get real representation. The Paul Anheuser Blanc de Noir 2023 and Folk Machine White Light 2025 showing up on a Virginia winery list is the kind of thing that earns credibility. Glass prices run $9–$17, which in 2024 is genuinely fair.
Mermaid Winery Pinot Noir 2022 — $30
Thirty dollars for a house-made Pinot Noir at the winery that made it — you're drinking where the wine lives. No middleman, no markup theater. It's the most honest value on the list.
Paul Anheuser Blanc de Noir 2023
A German Blanc de Noir from one of the Nahe's most respected producers showing up at a Virginia urban winery is legitimately unexpected. Most people will scroll past it for the Prosecco. Don't.
Acinum Prosecco Extra Dry
When you've got L. Mawby Brut Rosé on the same sparkling list, paying $39 for a mass-market Prosecco that retails for under $15 is a waste of a glass. Pick literally anything else in the sparkling section.
Villa Wolf Gewurztraminer 2024 + Ask your server for the seafood special
Gewurztraminer's lychee-and-spice character cuts through rich, briny seafood without fighting it — and at a Shore Drive restaurant in Virginia, there's almost certainly something from the water worth ordering. This is the move.
The Bottom Line
Mermaid Winery earns its Wild Card badge by being better than it has any obligation to be — a house-wine winery destination that quietly stocks Paul Anheuser, Folk Machine, and Vinum Cellars Chenin Blanc alongside its own labels. For Chesapeake, this list punches well above its weight class.

Press 626 has the bones of a wine bar concept and the wine list of a casual Italian chain — the prices are shockingly approachable, but six anonymous bottles do not a wine destination make. Come for the $6 pours if you're in the neighborhood, but don't reroute your evening around it.

Varia is the kind of Italian wine bar that earns a reliable night out — the list won't blow your mind, but it won't embarrass you either, and the atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting. If you're in Chesapeake looking for a proper bottle with dinner and a little romance, this is your move.

Abuelo's wine list is an afterthought dressed up as a menu section — four grocery-store labels at restaurant prices in a mall dining room. Come for the margaritas, stay for the margaritas, and let wine night happen somewhere else.

Yard House Chesapeake is exactly what it is: a polished chain bar with a wine list built for broad appeal, not wine nerds. Show up on a Monday, grab a half-price bottle of Meiomi or La Crema, and enjoy the vibe without overthinking it.

Ruby Tuesday's wine program is a placeholder, not a program — two grocery store bottles and a price tag that's at least fair for what it is. Order a cocktail, drink a beer, and save the wine drinking for somewhere that's trying.
