Wingman Metrics
You open the wine list at Meritage and the message is clear: this is a Callaway house, and Callaway is what you're drinking. That's not a criticism — when you're sitting on a hillside with vineyard rows stretching out below you, there's something honest about a restaurant that commits fully to its own backyard. Just don't show up expecting a deep cellar or a global tour.
Seventeen labels, all Callaway, all estate-grown in the Temecula Valley AVA — the list reads more like a winery tasting menu than a traditional restaurant wine program, which is essentially what it is. The range covers more ground than you'd expect: sparkling, rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache, Sangiovese, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, a red blend, and a sweet wine. That's a reasonable sweep of styles, even if the depth at any one variety is thin. The absence of any outside producers means if you're not vibing with Callaway's house style, you're out of options — there's no safety net here.
Eight to twelve options by the glass gives you solid coverage of the Callaway lineup without having to commit to a bottle, which makes sense in a setting where people are often grazing through small plates. The Bella Blanc sparkling wine shows up regularly for events and receptions, and it's a smart opener for the patio. Rotation doesn't appear to be a thing — what's on the list seems to be what's on the list, full stop.
Callaway Vineyard & Winery Grenache — null
Grenache in Temecula doesn't get nearly enough attention, and Callaway's version is a smart order — lighter on its feet than the Cab, food-friendly, and rarely the bottle people reach for first, which means it often carries a gentler markup. If you're eating through the small plates menu, this is your move.
Callaway Vineyard & Winery Sangiovese
Most people at a California winery head straight for the Cab or the red blend and never look back. The Sangiovese is the one worth pausing on — it's a variety that demands acidity and warmth to work, and Temecula's climate delivers both. It gets ignored in favor of bolder reds, which is exactly why you should order it.
Callaway Vineyard & Winery Sweet Wine
Sweet wines at winery restaurants exist mostly to capture the visitor who doesn't really want wine. Nothing wrong with that, but at a farm-to-table table with $25–$45 entrees, you're not doing yourself any favors pairing the chef's seasonal plates with something designed to taste like dessert before dessert.
Callaway Vineyard & Winery Sauvignon Blanc + Artisan Flatbread
Sauvignon Blanc and a well-made flatbread is one of those combinations that works without needing a reason — the herbaceous cut of the wine keeps up with whatever's on the flatbread, and the acidity cleans things up between bites. Easy call on a warm Temecula afternoon.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Meritage isn't trying to be a serious wine destination — it's a winery restaurant that wants you to drink Callaway wine with good food in a beautiful setting, and on those terms it delivers. Send a friend here for a relaxed weekend lunch, not a deep-dive wine experience.
South Temecula / Pechanga Resort Area · Temecula · Fine Dining Steakhouse
Great Oak is a reliable, well-run resort steakhouse wine program — the sommelier presence and proper storage elevate it above the casino norm, but steep markups and a brand-name-heavy list keep it from being anything more than a very comfortable choice. Send a friend here if they want a guaranteed-good bottle of California Cab with a great steak; steer them elsewhere if they're looking for discovery.

Avensole's restaurant is a committed estate-only experience, and if you go in knowing that, it delivers — fair pricing, a smart flight format, and some genuinely interesting bottles you won't find anywhere else. Just don't show up hoping for a diverse wine list; this is a one-winery show, and you're either in or you're not.

Café Champagne is a lovely place to drink Temecula wine if you're already in Temecula — the sparkling program is the real draw and the estate-only format at least has a clear point of view. Just don't show up expecting a deep, exploratory list; this is winery dining, not a wine destination in the broader sense.

Vindemia is a Wild Card in the truest sense: a tiny estate list, fair glass prices, a hillside setting, and a Wednesday deal that should be on more people's calendars. Show up on a weekday, order the Zinfandel Riserva, and let the food truck handle the rest.

Danza del Sol isn't trying to be a destination wine list — it's a winery that pours its own stuff on a dog-friendly patio, and in that context it mostly delivers. If you're already in Temecula wine country and you want somewhere to land for an hour with a board and a glass of local Tempranillo, this is a solid call.
