Walk into a wine bar in Sonoma Wine Country and you might expect wall-to-wall Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the usual local suspects. Maison flips that script almost immediately — Madeira from 1934, Friulano from El Dorado, Colombard from Russian River Valley, Mosel Rosé. This list is doing something genuinely different, and it knows it.
Maison leans hard into Old World depth while sprinkling in California producers you won't find anywhere else on a wine bar list. Loire Valley is well-represented — a Daulny Sancerre, Fabien Demois Chenin Blanc from Chinon, and the Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru anchoring a serious Champagne section that also finds room for Famille Delouvin's Meunier Perpetuel alongside the Krug Grande Cuvée. The California picks are deliberately off-script: Marchelle Old Vine Colombard from Russian River, Rovezzi's Friulano from El Dorado, Tatomer Grüner Veltliner from Edna Valley — this is a list built by someone who actively avoids the obvious. The one gap worth noting is reds: with 62 labels and 40 by-the-glass options, the research shows a strong white and sparkling bias, suggesting reds may play a supporting role rather than command attention.
Forty pours by the glass is a staggering number, and the range here earns every slot. You can go from a $15 Karthäuserhof Pinot Noir Rosé from the Mosel all the way to $75 for a pour of Justino's 1934 Verdelho Madeira — and that range is intentional, not accidental. The mid-tier options are where this list really shines: the Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling at $26/glass and the Niepoort Redoma Branco at $24/glass are serious wines being served at fair prices.

Maison is what happens when someone builds a wine bar list with genuine curiosity instead of a regional checklist — you're in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country and the list keeps pointing you toward Mosel Riesling, Douro whites, and 1934 Madeira. The by-the-glass program alone justifies a visit, and the pricing is fair enough that you can explore without flinching. If you're in Healdsburg and you actually care about wine, this is the stop.

The Marshall Store earns its reputation as a low-key, scenic spot for fresh West Coast oysters and smoked salmon — and if that's your mission, it delivers. But the wine program is effectively an afterthought: undocumented, uncurated, and not a reason to visit. Bring a bottle from one of the Healdsburg producers down the road, check the corkage policy at the door, and spend your energy on the food.
