First Impression
Walking into a converted historic mill in the heart of Loudoun County wine country, you expect the wine list to lean into the local story — and Magnolias mostly delivers. The list is approachable without being lazy, and the Virginia representation is genuine, not just a token pour or two. It feels like a place that actually cares about where it's located.
Selection Deep Dive
The list punches above its weight by weaving Virginia producers — 8 Chains North, Williams Gap, RdV, and Barboursville — alongside solid international picks from Rioja, Willamette Valley, Mendoza, and Paso Robles. RdV 'Lost Mountain' 2019 and Barboursville 'Octagon' 2020 sitting on the same list as a $30 Riff Pinot Grigio tells you the range is real. There are gaps — no real white Burgundy, no Rhône, nothing particularly adventurous on the sparkling front — but for a restaurant wine list in a small Virginia town, the bones are good. The international picks lean toward crowd-pleasers, which isn't a sin, just a ceiling.
By the Glass
Eighteen by-the-glass options is a genuinely solid number, and the spread covers sparkling, rosé, white, and red without feeling padded. What's missing is rotation — the list reads like it hasn't changed in a while, and there's no evidence of anything seasonal or spontaneous happening here. The high end of the glass pours tops out around $24, which is fair given the range on offer.
Argyle Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, OR — $52
Argyle is one of Oregon's most dependable Pinot houses and seeing it on a Loudoun County list at a reasonable bottle price is a small win. It drinks above its price point and holds up against richer dishes without dominating the table.
Zuccardi A Malbec, Mendoza, AR
Zuccardi Valle de Uco is one of Argentina's most serious producers, and the 'A' bottling punches well above what most people assume about Malbec at this price tier. Most guests will walk right past it for a Napa Cab — don't be most guests.
Sauvignon Blanc, Indaba, South Africa
Indaba is a perfectly drinkable $16 retail bottle — which makes a 138% restaurant markup sting. At $38 on the list, you're paying nearly two-and-a-half times what it's worth. Plenty of better value on this list.
Barboursville 'Octagon' 2020, VA + Braised short rib or a hearty beef entrée
Octagon is Barboursville's flagship Bordeaux-style blend — Merlot-led with cab franc and petit verdot. It's structured enough to stand up to rich braised beef while keeping everything feeling local and intentional. This is the bottle you order when you want the full Loudoun County experience.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Magnolias at the Mill is a genuinely pleasant place to drink Virginia wine in the building where the region's agricultural history happened. The markups are a bit aggressive on the entry-level bottles, but the Virginia representation and the presence of serious names like RdV and Barboursville make this worth a visit if you're wine-touring Loudoun County.
