The wine list at Luis' Place is compact β 20-something labels tucked inside a reservation-only dining room that feels more private dinner party than restaurant. That intimacy is the whole point, and the list leans into it: no sprawling encyclopedia, just a focused Franco-Italian selection that wants to match the chef's rotating intentions. It's not trying to win any awards, but it's clearly not an afterthought either.
France and Italy carry the entire list, which is a deliberate editorial choice rather than a lazy one. You'll find Louis Jadot's 100% Gamay rosΓ© sitting alongside the Maison Saleya, giving the program a bit of range even within a single category. On the red side, Michele Chiarlo's Barbera and the Titignano Turlo offer an Italian backbone that can hold up to the richer, chef-driven plates coming out of the kitchen. The gaps are real β no serious white program to speak of, and the New World is essentially absent β but within its lane, the list is cohesive.
Eight pours by the glass is a respectable count for a room this size, running $12β$18. The glass list overlaps meaningfully with the bottle program rather than just dumping the cheapest stuff into it, which is a good sign. Rotation appears tied to the chef's tasting format rather than a formal BTG program, so what's poured on a given night depends somewhat on what's being cooked.
Michele Chiarlo Barbera β $40β$50 (bottle est.)
Chiarlo's Barbera punches well above its price point β bright acidity, dark fruit, and enough structure to carry a full multi-course dinner without getting tired. At the lower end of Luis' bottle range, it's the move for a table that wants to drink well without committing to a big Barolo budget.
Louis Jadot RosΓ© (100% Gamay)
Most people reach for the reds at a dinner like this, but Jadot's all-Gamay rosΓ© is a genuinely interesting pour β earthy, a little savory, nothing like the pale Provence stuff that dominates every other list. It deserves a second look, especially against lighter courses early in a tasting menu.
Maison Saleya RosΓ©
With Jadot's Gamay rosΓ© on the same list doing something more interesting at likely a comparable price, the Maison Saleya feels redundant. It's a perfectly fine Provence-style pour, but you're not here for perfectly fine β order the Jadot.
Titignano Turlo Red + Chef's rotating red meat course (tasting menu)
The Turlo is an Umbrian blend built for the table β earthy, structured, but not so tannic it fights with food. Against whatever red meat anchor the chef lands on for the week, it threads the needle between standing up to the plate and letting the cooking shine.
π² The Bottom Line
Luis' Place isn't a wine destination, but for a small reservation-only room in downtown Topeka, it's doing something honest and intentional with a short Franco-Italian list that actually fits its format. Send a friend here for a special dinner β just know you're coming for the experience, not the cellar.

Jose Pepper's is a great spot for a frozen margarita and a chimichanga β the wine list just isn't why you're here, and it knows it. Order the cocktails and don't look back.

The wine list at Olive Garden East Topeka is a corporate document, not a wine program β marked up steeply on bottles that deserve no such confidence. Order a cocktail, split a bottle of the house Chianti if you must, and save your wine curiosity for literally anywhere else in Topeka.

The wine list exists because every Italian restaurant has to have one β not because anyone here is passionate about it. Drink the Cavit, enjoy the unlimited breadsticks, and save the serious wine drinking for somewhere else.

Red Lobster's wine list is exactly what you'd expect from a national chain that treats wine as an afterthought β familiar names, steep markups, zero curation. Order the Riesling, enjoy the Cheddar Bay Biscuits, and don't come here looking for a wine moment.

Olive Garden is not a wine destination and was never trying to be one β the list exists to move bottles, not to inspire anyone. Order the Il Grigio if you want something worth drinking, otherwise stick to the Chianti and save your wine energy for somewhere else.

Graylyn Estate is a genuinely beautiful place to have dinner, but the wine list is an afterthought in a room that deserves intention. Order the sea bass, grab the La Crema, and try not to think too hard about what this list could have been.

Nick's on 2nd is a dependable neighborhood wine stop β solid list, familiar producers, nothing that'll blow your mind but nothing that'll disappoint a table of mixed drinkers. Send a friend here for a date night, just tell them to order the Duckhorn and leave the Jordan for someone else.

Coles 735 Main is doing real work on a wine list in a market that doesn't always demand it β a sommelier on staff, proper glassware, and genuine depth beyond the Napa greatest hits make it the best wine destination in Lexington by a comfortable margin. The markups are steep in spots and there's no specials program to speak of, but for a date night or a special occasion dinner in Kentucky, this is the room.
