The wine list at Leaf isn't trying to compete with the downtown steakhouses β and that's exactly the point. It's compact, deliberately organic-leaning, and built to complement a menu that's doing something most wine lists never have to think about: zero meat, all texture. The commitment to certified organic producers gives the whole thing a coherent identity that a lot of bigger lists never manage.
Twenty-five to fifty bottles sounds modest, but Leaf earns points for curation over volume. The list pulls from California and the Pacific Northwest with a clear bias toward organic and biodynamic farming β Frey Vineyards, Badger Mountain, and Bonterra are the anchors here, all certified organic and all priced to move. France and Italy add some geographic breadth, though neither region gets deep coverage. The gap is noticeable if you're hunting for an aged Burgundy or a serious Barolo, but that's not really who this list is for.
Six to ten pours by the glass is a respectable showing for a restaurant at this price point, and the organic thread runs through the glass program too. Rotation appears limited β this reads more like a standing lineup than a frequently refreshed slate β but what's there is consistent with the list's identity and food-friendly enough to hold up across a globally influenced menu.
Bonterra Organic Chardonnay β $12
Bonterra's Chardonnay punches above its retail weight β it's a clean, fruit-forward pour from certified organic Mendocino fruit that doesn't gouge you at the table. At this price in a sit-down restaurant, it's an easy yes.
Badger Mountain Organic Riesling
Most people at a vegetarian restaurant reach for Chardonnay or whatever red is cheapest. The Badger Mountain Riesling from Washington's Columbia Valley is the smarter play β it has the acidity and a touch of residual sweetness that makes it genuinely versatile across spiced, globally inspired dishes.
Frey Vineyards Organic Merlot
Frey is a pioneer in organic wine and deserves respect for that, but their Merlot tends to be light-bodied and rustic in a way that can feel underpowered against Leaf's bolder, umami-driven plates. There are better red options if they're on the list β ask your server before defaulting to this one.
Badger Mountain Organic Riesling + Butternut squash enchiladas
The enchiladas bring sweetness from the squash and heat from the chile sauce β the Riesling's acidity cuts through the richness while its fruit mirrors the squash's sweetness without competing. It's a genuinely good match in a context where that's harder to pull off than it looks.
π² The Bottom Line
Leaf isn't a destination wine list, but it's an honest one β organic-focused, fairly priced, and thoughtfully matched to food that most wine programs never consider. If you're eating plant-based and want a glass that actually thinks about what's on your plate, this is your spot.
University Hill Β· Boulder Β· Spanish- and Moroccan-inspired tapas and small plates
Cafe Aion's wine list is solidly built around its concept, and the daily 50% off bottles deal from 3pm to close is one of the most generous standing wine programs in Boulder β full stop. The markups at full price are steep enough to give you pause, so do yourself a favor and show up before dinner.

Boulder Social is a solid neighborhood hangout where beer is the move and wine is an afterthought priced accordingly. If it's Tuesday, half-price bottles change the math β otherwise, stick to the taps.

West Pearl Street Β· Boulder Β· Italian
Via Perla isn't trying to be a wine destination β it's trying to be a great Italian osteria, and the wine list serves that goal honestly. Come for the pasta and the Barolo, don't overthink it.

Carelli's is a dependable neighborhood Italian with a wine list that matches its ambition β comfortable and crowd-pleasing, not adventurous. Send your friend here if they want a nice Italian night and a bottle of Antinori; steer them elsewhere if they're hoping to find something they've never tried before.

Gemini is the kind of place Boulder doesn't have enough of β a restaurant where the wine list actually reflects the food and the region it's inspired by. If you eat Spanish, you should be drinking Iberian, and Gemini makes that case effortlessly.

Goss-Grove Β· Boulder Β· Argentinian / Latin American
Rincon Argentino is a genuinely good casual spot for Argentine food, but the wine list is a missed opportunity β overpriced supermarket bottles with no rotation, no discovery, and no apparent effort. Grab a glass with your empanadas, but don't build a night around the wine.
