Desert Art Town's Surprisingly Legit Wine Program

Wingman Metrics
You're in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, surrounded by reclaimed brick walls and art that costs more than your car, and somehow the wine list has 18 by-the-glass options. That's not what we expected pulling into Marfa, and we mean that as a compliment. The list reads like someone actually thought about it rather than just calling their Sysco rep.
The list leans on a tight rotation of value-forward producers — Hobo Wine Company, Felino, and Bellusi anchor things with reliable, crowd-pleasing quality. Argentina gets real representation with Felino's Chardonnay, Cab, and Malbec all showing up, which makes sense given how well those price-to-quality ratios play out on a hotel restaurant list. There's a nod to France with the 2022 Les Athlètes du Vin Gamay, which is a genuine outlier in a lineup otherwise built for accessibility. Gaps exist — no domestic Pinot Noir, no real Spanish presence, and the depth stops pretty quickly once you scratch the surface.
Eighteen options by the glass is genuinely impressive for a hotel restaurant in a town of 2,000 people. Prices run $12–$16, which keeps things honest and lets you explore without committing to a bottle. We'd love to see more rotation, but for a set list, the range covers bubbly, white, rosé, and red without making anyone feel stuck.
2023 Felino Malbec (Argentina) — $16
Felino is a Paul Hobbs project from Mendoza, and getting it by the glass for $16 in a hotel restaurant is the kind of deal that makes you order a second pour without guilt. Solid structure, drinks well with the wood-fired pizza or a steak.
2022 Les Athlètes du Vin Gamay
Nobody comes to a Marfa hotel bar looking for Gamay, and that's exactly why you should order it. It's the most interesting thing on the list — lighter, fresher, and totally out of step with the Malbec-and-Cab crowd around it. A welcome left turn.
Shebang NV 17th Cuvée
Shebang is a budget-tier blended red that retails for around $10 a bottle. Seeing it on a hotel restaurant list at glass prices feels like a filler pick — there are better options on this same list for the same money.
2023 Deux Moulins Sauvignon Blanc + Wood oven-fired pizza
A bright, herby Sauvignon Blanc against the char and acidity of a wood-fired pizza is a better call than you'd think — the wine's citrus edge cuts through the richness without fighting the toppings.
🎲 The Bottom Line
LaVenture is punching well above its weight for a hotel restaurant in the middle of nowhere, and the by-the-glass program alone makes it worth sitting down for a pour. Not destination-worthy on the wine alone, but if you're already in Marfa, this is exactly where you want to drink.
Hotel Saint George · Marfa · Farm-to-Table
St. George Restaurant isn't trying to be a wine destination — but it's trying harder than most places twice its size in cities ten times larger. If you're in Marfa, drink the Gamay, consider the Hobo, and appreciate that someone here actually thought about this list.

Marfa Texas Kitchen isn't a destination wine stop, but it's doing something genuinely interesting by centering Texas producers in a market that rarely bothers. If you're eating here, drink the Texas stuff — that's the whole point.

Chateau Wright is a detour that earns its keep — a small, serious estate winery doing something genuinely rare in Texas, with a food truck, mountain views, and no delusions of grandeur. If you're anywhere near Marfa or Fort Davis, skipping it is the wrong call.

Alta Marfa is a Wild Card in the truest sense: it shouldn't exist at this level in a town this remote, and yet here we are. If you're passing through Marfa and you care even a little about wine, this is not optional.

Bar Saint George isn't a wine destination, but it's a damn fine place to drink well while you debate whether the Judd sculptures are worth the drive. At these prices, in this zip code, we'd send a friend here without hesitation.

Alta Marfa is a one-winery show, and if you can get on board with that premise, it's one of the more singular wine experiences in Texas — or anywhere, frankly. Send a friend here if they're curious about what West Texas terroir actually tastes like.

CraftWay Kitchen isn't trying to be a wine destination and doesn't pretend to be — but the markups are fair, the glass program is wide, and there's enough on the list to drink well with a solid meal. Send your friends here for dinner; just don't send them here for a wine education.

Sixty Vines is a solid, reliable wine stop in Winston-Salem — the by-the-glass breadth is real and the staff knows their stuff, but the list reads like a greatest hits album rather than anything adventurous. Come for the volume, stay for the pizza, but don't expect to have your mind changed about wine.
