Wingman Metrics
Walk in expecting a tourist trap winery and leave genuinely surprised. Kuhlman is an estate operation β every bottle on this list is theirs, grown in the Hill Country heat, and they wear that with confidence. The focus is tight and intentional, not a sprawling list trying to be everything.
This is an all-Texas, all-estate list, which is either a feature or a bug depending on your priors. The range leans into grapes that actually want to grow here β Trebbiano and Chenin Blanc on the white side, Grenache and Petite Sirah holding down the reds. It's not a list for the Burgundy hunter or the Napa loyalist, but for anyone genuinely curious about what Texas Hill Country wine can do, there's real ground to cover here. The gaps are obvious β no old-world benchmarks, no outside context β but that's the point. Kuhlman is making an argument, not a compromise.
With 10 to 16 pours available by the glass, this is one of the more generous glass programs you'll find at an estate winery anywhere. That means you can actually drink your way across the portfolio without committing to a full bottle, which is the right call on a first visit. Rotation appears tied to current releases rather than any structured seasonal program.
Chenin Blanc β Unknown
Chenin Blanc is a grape that thrives in heat and keeps its acid β which makes it a smart bet in the Texas Hill Country. As an estate pour, you're getting a wine made with purpose, not a bulk buy dressed up with a label.
Trebbiano
Nobody comes to a Texas winery hunting Trebbiano, which is exactly why you should order it. It's an underdog grape even in Italy, and Kuhlman growing it here is a genuine swing worth taking β crisp, unfussy, and almost nobody at the table will have had it before.
Petite Sirah
Petite Sirah runs big and tannic even in cooler climates β in Texas heat that can push into overripe, extracted territory. If you're not already a fan of the grape, this is a risky order. Start with something lighter and come back to it if the mood strikes.
Grenache + Charcuterie Board
Grenache's red fruit and lighter frame don't bully cured meats the way a heavier red would. It lets the salt and fat of the charcuterie do their thing while giving you something refreshing to come back to between bites.
π² The Bottom Line
Kuhlman Cellars is the rare estate winery that feels like it actually has something to say. If you're road-tripping through Hill Country wine country and want to understand what this region is reaching for, this is the stop worth slowing down for.
Downtown / Sophia Street Riverfront Β· Fredericksburg Β· Spanish and Latin-inspired tapas
Tapa Rio isn't a destination wine list, but it's a well-matched one β thoughtfully Iberian, reasonably priced, and honest about what it is. If you're eating on that patio with a glass of AlbariΓ±o and a plate of tapas in front of you, you're going to be just fine.

Central Park Β· Fredericksburg Β· American steakhouse and wood-fired grill
Firebirds is a dependable wine stop for a steakhouse night out β nothing on the list will make you lean across the table with excitement, but nothing will disappoint either. Send a friend here if they want a reliable glass of California Cab with their ribeye and zero homework required.

Downtown Fredericksburg Β· Fredericksburg Β· Traditional Italian
Ristorante Renato is a genuinely lovely dinner out in Fredericksburg, and the wine won't ruin your night β but it won't be the reason you came back either. The California-only lens feels like a mismatch for a kitchen this committed to Italian tradition; one pass through the list with an eye toward the Old World would change the whole experience.

You're not coming to Bahama Breeze for the wine list, and honestly, that's fine β order a rum cocktail and call it a day. But if someone at the table insists on wine, point them toward the Riesling and keep your expectations firmly at sea level.

The Melting Pot Fredericksburg is a perfectly fine place to drink wine β as long as you're not coming for the wine. The list keeps up with the experience without elevating it, and you'll leave full and content, which is honestly what most people at this table are here for.

BJ's Fredericksburg is a beer hall that happens to stock wine β and the wine list knows it. The Tuesday discount promo is the only real reason to order a bottle here; otherwise, trust the taps and save your wine budget for somewhere that earned it.
