Big steaks, small list, questionable Furmint math

Three bottles. That's the wine list at Knight's Steakhouse — a classic, no-frills Ann Arbor institution that clearly decided wine was someone else's problem. For a steakhouse where a ribeye is a legitimate occasion, this is a swing and a miss.
The list is three bottles deep: a Greenwing Cab from Columbia Valley, a Goldschmidt Merlot out of Alexander Valley, and — this is where it gets interesting — an Evolúció Furmint from Tokaj, Hungary, which has absolutely no business being on a list this short and yet somehow is. There's also an Albariño from Rías Baixas, which rounds out the by-the-glass options. The breadth ends there. No Pinot Noir, no Zinfandel, no Syrah, not a single other red option for a room full of people eating prime rib. If you're hunting depth, terroir diversity, or anything beyond the basics, you'll leave hungry in a different way.
All four wines are available by the glass in 5oz or 8oz pours, which is essentially the entire list — so what you see is what you get. Pours range from $7 to $17, which is fine in theory but steep relative to the bottles themselves. There's no rotation, no seasonal program, no chalkboard surprise — just the same four options every time.
Lagar da Condesa O Fillo da Condesa Albariño Rías Baixas '24 — $39/bottle
At $39 a bottle, the Albariño is the most interesting wine on the list and the cheapest. It's a bright, saline white from Galicia that cuts through rich food — and at this price point, it's the only bottle here that feels like it's not punishing you.
Evolúció Furmint Tokaj Hungary '23
Nobody walking into a neighborhood steakhouse is ordering Furmint by the glass, which is exactly why you should. It's a textural, slightly oxidative white from Hungary's most famous wine region — genuinely distinctive, and at $7 for a 5oz pour, it's the most adventurous thing on the menu by a mile. The $360 bottle price is a fever dream, but the glass pour is a steal.
Greenwing Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley '24
A widely distributed, mass-market Cab priced at $42 a bottle and $14 for an 8oz pour. It's the path of least resistance on a short list, and you'll be paying steakhouse markup for something that retails for well under $15. There's a better choice on this small list.
Goldschmidt Chelsea Merlot 'Guidestone Rise Vineyard' Alexander Valley '23 + Ribeye steak
The Goldschmidt Merlot is a richer, structured Alexander Valley red that has the weight to stand up to a well-marbled ribeye. It's the most food-appropriate bottle on the list for what Knight's actually does best.
❌ The Bottom Line
Knight's is a beloved Ann Arbor institution for a reason — but that reason is not the wine list. If you're coming for the prime rib or the burger, you'll have a great time; just order a beer or a cocktail and don't think too hard about the Cab.

Eve is a dependable, well-kept hotel wine list that earns its place as Ann Arbor's go-to for faculty dinners and anniversary meals — just don't come expecting to be surprised. Order the Merry Edwards, skip the Stag's Leap markup, and let someone else handle the tab.

Bravo! is a chain doing chain things with its wine list — predictable, approachable, and not particularly exciting. But the markup is fairer than most chains, the by-the-glass range is functional, and if you show up on a Wednesday, $7 Provençal rosé on the patio is a genuinely good time.

The Ravens Club isn't a wine destination — it's a late-night Ann Arbor institution that happens to have a functional wine list. Show up on a Wednesday, order the Gruet for $6, and let the spirits program do its real job.

Slurping Turtle is a genuinely fun spot to eat, and the ramen deserves your full attention — but the wine list is on cruise control and nobody seems to mind. Stick to a glass of Riesling or grab a beer, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that reciprocates it.

Nagomi is the rare sushi spot that made an actual choice with its wine program instead of just phoning it in with grocery store staples — a focused BC lineup at fair prices is exactly the kind of unexpected that earns a second look. If you're curious about Canadian wine and want a low-stakes way to explore it, this is your spot.

Tomukun is a great place to eat Korean BBQ and drink soju with friends — the wine list is just not the reason to come here. Order the Riesling if you must, or do yourself a favor and let the soju do the work.

Bake's Place Prime is a dependable wine list for a steakhouse night out — it won't surprise you, but it won't let you down if you know where to look. The markups sting a bit, but order the Force Majeure or the Barolo instead of the obvious hits and you'll leave happy.

Orange County Mining Co. is a special-occasion spot that leans hard on its setting and its steaks — the wine list is along for the ride, not leading the charge. Come for the view and the prime rib, order the Jordan, and don't overthink it.
