The list at Il Vinaio is big enough to feel like a wine bar but comfortable enough that nobody's going to panic. Fifty-six labels and 37 by-the-glass options signals genuine effort — this isn't a restaurant that grudgingly added a wine section to the menu. Prices top out at $160 a bottle and open at $19, which keeps the room democratic.
The list leans heavily on familiar American producers — Justin, A to Z, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Josh — with a few international ringers sprinkled in to keep things interesting. The white wine side is where the real work has been done: you'll find a Cambria Tepusquet Viognier, a Matanzas Creek Albariño, and even a Virna Borgogno Timorasso from Piedmont that has no business being on a Mesa wine list (in the best possible way). Reds by the glass are more conventional, anchored by crowd-pleasing blends, and there's a sweet-and-sparkling section that rounds out the list with Moscato, White Zin, and Port. Gaps show up in old-world reds — you're not finding Barolo or serious Bordeaux here — but that's not really the point.
Thirty-seven by-the-glass options is genuinely impressive for a neighborhood spot and gives you real room to explore rather than just picking between the Chardonnay and the Cab. Glass pours run $6 to $17, with most interesting selections landing in the $10–$14 range — fair for Arizona. The range spans sparkling, sweet, white, rosé, and red, so the BTG program is doing actual work.
Monte Gravet Cinsault Rosé 2024 — $34
Cinsault rosé from southern France at $34 a bottle is a genuine bargain — this style drinks fresh, lively, and well above its price point. It's the bottle we'd order twice.
Virna Borgogno Sto Fuori White Barolo (Timorasso) 2022
A Timorasso from Piedmont at $45 is the kind of wine most people scroll past because they've never heard of it — which is exactly why you should order it. Timorasso is a rare, age-worthy Italian white with real texture and structure, and finding it anywhere outside a serious wine bar is a minor miracle.
Joseph Carr Josh Craftsman's Collection Chardonnay 2024
At $38 a bottle, you're paying a steep premium for a brand built on marketing. With the Napa Cellars Chardonnay at $42 and the Rex Hill Seven Soils Chardonnay at $58 both on the same list, the Josh is the weakest value in its own category.
Cambria Tepusquet Vineyard Viognier 2022 + Grilled chicken or seafood entrée
Viognier's aromatic richness and stone-fruit weight love lighter proteins off the grill — the Cambria at $46 is plush enough to hold its own without overpowering anything.
The Bottom Line
Il Vinaio is a reliable neighborhood wine bar punching slightly above its weight with a few smart, unexpected picks tucked into an otherwise crowd-pleasing list. If you're in Mesa and want a real glass of wine with dinner, this is where we'd send you.

Cooper's Hawk Gilbert is a brand experience first and a wine destination second — possibly third. The $8 flat-glass pricing keeps the night affordable, but six house-only labels with no rotation, no independent producers, and no depth to explore earns a Lazy List badge. Order the Tempranillo or the Super Tuscan, enjoy your dinner, and don't expect the list to surprise you.

A French bistro in the East Valley that runs an all-sparkling wine list anchored by Grower Champagne and topped with Egly-Ouriet and Selosse is not something you expect to exist, and yet here we are. If you're a Champagne nerd, this list is worth the trip; if you wanted a Cab with your steak, you're going to have a rough night.
