Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Halls Chophouse Columbia arrives like the restaurant itself — polished, confident, and not particularly interested in surprising you. Around 220-260 labels deep, it reads like a greatest hits of American fine dining: heavy on California Cabernet, anchored by recognizable names, and priced to match the white-tablecloth energy. It does its job well, even if it plays it closer to the fairway than we'd like.
California dominates, and that's not a complaint — Jordan, Silver Oak, Caymus, Cakebread, Far Niente, and DuMol are all present, covering the spectrum from Alexander Valley crowd-pleasers to serious Russian River Chardonnay. There's a nod to France with Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne representation (Louis Roederer, Veuve Clicquot), plus Tuscany, Piedmont, Ribera del Duero, and some Pacific Northwest muscle rounding out the flanks. Penfolds Bin series and Chilean options show up as token New World gestures, but don't expect a deep dive into natural wine, skin-contact oddities, or anything that would raise an eyebrow at a South Carolina state dinner. Opus One sits at the top of the list as the aspirational anchor — it's there, it's real, and someone will order it.
Roughly 18-24 pours span red, white, sparkling, rosé, and dessert — a generous by-the-glass spread for a steakhouse in this market. Prices run $12-$32 per glass, which is fair for the top end and reasonable in the middle. The list rotates less than we'd want — this feels more like a fixed menu than a program with any chef-driven curiosity behind it.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley — $55–$75 (bottle estimate based on list range)
Jordan is one of the most consistently reliable Cabs in California and typically comes in at a more honest markup than the cult names sitting next to it on this list. It drinks well with a ribeye and doesn't require a second mortgage.
Justin Isosceles, Paso Robles
Most people at a steakhouse beeline for Napa Cab. Isosceles is a Bordeaux-style blend from Paso that punches well above its profile recognition — structured, layered, and usually priced below the Silver Oaks and Caymus bottles that hog the attention. Worth the detour.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
At $180 a bottle on a wine that retails around $90, you're paying a 100% markup for one of the most over-ordered, over-hyped Cabs in the American restaurant ecosystem. It's not a bad wine — it's just not worth that delta when better options sit nearby for less.
DuMol Chardonnay, Russian River Valley + Wild Salmon with Chimichurri
DuMol is one of the serious Chardonnay producers in Sonoma — restrained oak, good acid, real texture. Against the herbal brightness of chimichurri and the richness of wild salmon, it holds its ground without steamrolling the dish. A smarter move than defaulting to red with everything on this menu.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Halls Chophouse Columbia is a reliable, capable steakhouse wine list — sommelier on staff, proper storage, solid range, and a by-the-glass program with real options. The markups on the hit-parade bottles are steep enough to sting, but pick smart and you'll drink well. Send your friends here for the steak; just steer them away from the Caymus.
Forest Acres · Columbia · Contemporary American Bistro with Southern Influences
Tombo Grille isn't going to win any points for boldness, but it delivers exactly what Forest Acres wants: familiar wines, fair-enough execution, and a menu worth eating. Send a friend here for a reliable dinner out — just temper expectations if they're hoping to discover something new.

Irmo / Northwest Columbia · Columbia · Contemporary American-Italian
Travinia is a reliable neighborhood wine bar that gets the basics right — solid selection, good by-the-glass volume, food-friendly pours — without ever swinging for the fences. Send your friends here for a comfortable bottle with dinner, not for a wine discovery experience.

Sandhill · Columbia · Contemporary American-Italian
Travinia Sandhill is a reliable wine bar in a market that doesn't have many — not adventurous, not cheap, but consistent enough that you won't regret the reservation. Just steer clear of the obvious traps and you'll have a decent night.

Unknown · Columbia · Seafood
The Bluefish plays it safe and the pricing reflects more confidence than the list deserves, but the core selection is competent enough for a solid seafood dinner with the right pour. Stick to the whites, ask about the Albariño, and don't let anyone talk you into a $78 Cakebread.

St Andrews · Columbia · Japanese, Sushi
Inakaya Watanabe is clearly a solid neighborhood sushi spot, and the food likely earns its loyal following — but the wine program is an afterthought that nobody has revisited in years. Come for the fish, order sake if they have it, and treat the wine list as a last resort.

The Vista · Columbia · Asian / Sushi & Pan-Asian
M Vista's wine list is functional, fairly priced, and completely unambitious — which honestly fits the room. Send a friend here for sushi and a casual bottle of J Lohr; don't send them here expecting a wine experience.

Ruth's Chris Overland Park delivers exactly what it promises: a big, well-managed wine list staffed by people who know it, served in proper glassware at prices that will make you wince. Send a friend here for a business dinner or a celebration, but tell them to stick to the mid-tier California reds and leave the prestige bottles for someone else's tab.

Perry's Frisco is a reliable steakhouse wine program — well-organized, staffed by someone who actually knows wine, and broad enough to keep most tables happy.
